Fitting a stable door and frame next week. Was thinking of screwing a roofing lat to lock side and fitting as a full door for hinge alignment. Or is it top first then trimming bottom of lower door? Any advice please.

Not sure I understand, by "roofing lat" do you mean screwing some batten to the two halves so that you can hang it as a single door ?

I can't remember the last time I hung a stable door, but I reckon I would deal with it by hanging the top part first, and then the bottom half.

If you screw the two halves together I reckon there might be a possibility that when you release the battens, the top half might drop a tad resulting in an uneven gap between the two halves (and causing them to bind)

If you hang the top part first, and then the bottom, you can be sure that both will swing ok.

But there might be some on here who have had more experience of stable doors.

yes fit the top first then bottom. make sure hanging side of frame is straight or it can be a pain to get right

Cheers, top first it is then. I realize that all must be 100% straight and square. Thats why I'm fitting a frame. Done a few Upvc and composite doors but not wooden ones. Might even lay it out on floor to see what the gaps are like first.

but not wooden ones

Sharp tools is the secret ! Fix the hanging side of the frame more secure than the lock side. Next hang your doors, then tweak and adjust the lock side as required, before finally fixing securely. Hopefully this will reduce what you have to shoot off the doors to a minimum.

Stable doors are truly the spawn of the devil himself, should be just like fitting two doors in principle but an absolute fekin nightmare to get right first time.
Your idea of fixing the two halves together is pretty spot on, just make sure you batten left and right sides and gap the middle perfectly otherwise when you close both leaves,,, well you'll find out.
If you hang the top first you won't be able to close the bottom leaf due to the way the rebate works.
