I have an elu flip saw which has a motor starting problem.

If I depress the starter switch the motor doesn't start. If I spin the blade the motor energizes. So I quickly googled a parts list and found a capacitor, it doesn't state starter capacitor. Could that be the most likely culprit?

Not a motors expert as such but yes, the start cap is your most likely fault on a non-starting induction motor powered device.

Assuming AC not battery driven then probably - though you could also have fried one of the coils. The capacitor is there to give a phase shift between the two coils so the effect is similar.

Not an expert on motors I might add - just know a little about that there electric stuff.

Stoner Sr had a starting problem with his bandsaw. Local engineering co said it was the capacitor but could not find a spare for the motor, so theyve fitted a new external starter that has the capacitive function. Cost a lot less than replacing the motor.

Stoner, I've been in a similar fix before. Have you got anything else that you could temporarily cannibalise one from ? I nicked the one out of my compressor when the jet wash went t*ts 😀

Capacitors obviously come in different values but this worked for me.

Engineering Agiencies in Dunfermline had a new starter capacitor, I just fitted it and it starts a treat. 😀

EDIT I think my compressors starting capacitor is on it's way out too. The motor struggles to start when the compressor is up to pressure, no issues when the tank is empty.

Does the unloader valve work when the compressor stops at pressure as if it isn't doing so then it will be starting under load against tank pressure.

When it reaches max tank pressure the regulator shuts off the motor, and when the pressure in the tank drops it should switch the motor back on. It's at that point that the motor struggles to restart. Do you think it is the regulator that is at fault rather than the capacitor?

At the point when it switches off you should hear a short release of air, this is the air in the delivery pipe from the cylinder head to the non return valve in the tank.

If its not dumping the air in the delivery pipe that would explain why its struggling to start

Yes it does release a short release of air, its looking most likely to be an electrical fault in the capacitor.
