Bound to be 🙂

My Bosch Classixx half-size (or whatever the term is for smaller ones) dishwasher has a fault, and is no longer in warranty.

Basically, you switch it on and rather than setting going it makes a funny noise that sounds a bit like a motor struggling to turn or something. Sometimes it doesn't get past this stage, sometimes it does that for a while then eventually manages to slosh some water around inside but doesn't open the tablet compartment and doesn't wash things properly.

Sometimes it does the weird noise for a bit but then works fine.

There was a period where it didn't work at all - we left it for a few months while trying to get round to sorting it, tried it again and it was fine for a good few months before behaving as above.

Anyone got any ideas or do I need to call in a dishwasher engineer type person? The filter isn't clogged up or anything.

Don't ask a load of cycling muppets, go and ask nicely on DIYnot.com but make sure you give the model type etc or they'll be rude to you.

You can also borrow the Haynes Washing Machine and Dishwasher Repair Manual from your local library.

something else might be blocked. Or broken. Hard to say 🙂 Strip the whole thing down piece by piece and see if you can find anything that looks broken 🙂

Seems like everyones dishwahers are broken at the moment. Facebook is full of "my dishwasher is broken" status (my friends are really exciting!)

Sounds like a pump motor problem. Given that it works sometimes, that suggests it can be repaired rather than scrapped, though if it is out of warranty, I'd start taking it apart. most likely something somewhere is clogged, pump is not bridging it up to pressure, and not starting the cycle?

Check water feed,
check pump,
check moving parts still move freely?

What I did...

Bought a shop-soiled but brand new one (Smeg) from Ebay for £110.

Sold my non-working one (Siemens) on Ebay for £80.

And they are called 'slimline'.

I had a similar problem last week.

Took the filter out, took the cover plate off the drain and found that someone (either my toddler or my wife) had put a load of stones in there to get nice and clean. Apparently these don't mix well with the filter.

There's your problem. Stones.

Sounds like ours when there has been too much mash potato in it. Seems to clog the filters. Try and clean all the filtery bits, run on highest temperature setting to give it a really good clean (if it will start a cycle). The one in our old house got so blocked we had to get a man in and he sorted it and it cost £90 (about 5-6 years ago).

Thanks everyone, I'm currently trying a few things out that I've seen on that DIYnot website. Just trying it now to see if I've been successful.

Was it stones or mashed potato?

A standard wash cycle should take less than a couple of hours, he should have been back by now. Has he drowned? He's drowned hasn't he? Yes, I suspect that's it. 😥
