Just bought the eldest a budget LT for Xmas an Acer Aspire something or other, don't wanna put norton on it as had loads of issues with Norton on a previous machine. Any other suggestions please preferably free or dirt cheap

Whatever the free Microsoft thing is called these days (Defender/MSE), plus an occasional scan with Malwarebytes.

Windows Defender comes free with Windows 8.1 (which is presumably what you have on a new laptop). IIRC, it will automatically enable itself when you remove whatever free trial foisterware came with the machine.

I got the one (Windows Defender?) that Cougar & Scotroutes mentioned. Seems ok up to now.
