And another....

Anyone tried the off the shelf performance chips v a garage ECU flash job. Seems too good to be true?

I used to have similar on my old 307. All it did was tell the ECU that the air temp was lower than it was so it dumped more fuel into the cylinders. On proper cold days, it would over-fuel so much it would just pump black smoke out the exhaust.

On warmer days when you overtook something you had to shift before 3,500 rpm as the excess fuel would cause an emissions fault to kick in so it went into limp home mode.

They may have changed but from my side more placebo than actual perfomance increase

There is not a cat in hells chance I would plug one of those into my engine.

Try here :-

I tried it (a revo map) and had the same as windydave. No end of problems.

Simply put; don't do it.

Who on earth in their right mind would plug in a £70 chip off ebay into an ECU that took years of R&D and millions to develop ?

As above, get a proper remap if you want it to not blow up or cause issues, the best for T5 are Pendle:

As above don't. Plenty of good people offering remaps.

Proper re-map is the way to go. Everyone told me not to cut corners and get an iffy chip for reasons above. My last T5 (2.5tdi) was re-mapped from 130 to 170bhp which was fine, obviously quicker/more torque but weidly seemed a little bit better on economy which I couldn't really understand as more power. This and running on posh diesel made a vast improvement.

Another vote for Pendle.

Martin is a good guy and has put a lot into understanding these vans and getting things sorted properly. He has a track record of success and backup. Respected in the business.

Which engine is it? (tdi110 / pd130 / pd150 / cr170 / tdi90 etc.)

It's a 1.9Tdi 102

Cheers all...glad I asked. Re-map now duly booked in for a Celtic tune.

CT suggest a gain to circa 160bhp and a similar % bump in Torque...not overly bothered by economy but the thought of trying to slog it up hills and down dales with a fully loaded van with 102 makes me want to cry!

Happy days...

Fuel burn more efficiently with more combustion etc? Me mate boy racer used to tune his own boy racer cars and he went on to explain to me about how fuel burn mixture etc ... ZZzzzzz .... fell asleep after 2 minutes and woke up later and he was still on about it ... 😆

I asked my Tame Petrolhead. This is his response:

looks like a high pressure fuel rail, I'd avoid cheapo tuning boxes on them.
Might be worth finding out what APR or Jabbasport can do, rolling road remap wise. Say goodbye to warranty, if that matters.

FWIW, I have the boggo 1.9 102, fully loaded as a camper, and it took us all over Europe, up mountain col and down mountain pass no issues.
