Hi All

I need to get a laptop or other portable device that will allow me to access skype etc, whilst also being moderately useful for doing basic work on- I dont need fancy editing software or mega processing power.

Looking at perhaps a netbook, s/h, Samsung N220+ or should I be looking at something else second hand?

Any advice would be appreciated! Cheers

I wouldn't get a 10" netbook, or a single-core Atom.
I would look at a second hand 11.6" 1366x768 laptop with a half-decent dual core intel processor, keyboard and screen.

Maybe something like a
Dell 1545
HP DM1
Samsung X120 (one here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-X120-Laptop-11-6-Ultra-Portable-1-3-GHz-Windows-7-/280827269580?pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item41629c11cc)

I bought a Dell D430 on ebay for about that - 1.3Ghz and 2Mb RAM is a tad slow but fine for Internet/Word/ and even Visual Studio for light work, and more powerful than a netbook for movies, etc.

Only a little bigger than a netbook, nice form factor for travelling, and I do like the keyboard layout.

Screen at 1280*768 is fine if you make all the menus/icon/fonts smaller.

Have to use an external DVD or use the media slice you can get.

Put an Echo Indigo IO PCMIA card in it for very high quality sound - get a power amp and some decent speakers and you have a little hifi fo rinternet radio, ripped CDs, etc.

Morgan had a few offers of larger screen refurbished laptops for under £200:

Go 2nd hand, you'll get a much better machine, do you need something with a webcam for skype or would a plug in webcam suit?

normally better quality than a built in webcam & help bring the price of the laptop down. My brother owns an IT company & deals in ex corporate machines, normally have minimal use & are really good spec although look a bit "dull" (plain black)IBM, dells etc. I could ask him if he has anything if you'd like?

@Dazz- yeah, that would be great!

@Turnerguy- thing is the budget could just run away with me on this one. Temptation and reality are vastly different I think.

Re: the Morgan suggestion, might be worth reading this thread before buying from them.
