Apparently my hero is faulty and is being replaced tomorrow. But I have loads of contacts and stuff on the phone. Can anyone recommend a backup tool that saves it all ?

Thanks.

Titanium backup does quite a good job on my desire. Free version is good enough. I think it backs it up to somewhere on the sd card, you should probably check out where it puts things, and either copy it off, or make sure you don't let them have the SD card.

For contacts, are they not under your google account, can't you just make sure that you sync them back to the google servers? I've certainly got my contacts back that way.

My phone is rooted, which I think makes it easier to backup mind - I have something called nandroid, which just bungs all the phone software and data off into a file, then bungs it back on the new phone, but I think you have to root/hack the phone to get that.

I use MyBackup Pro - really useful and configurable (even more so if rooted but still plenty of options if not). You can download a free trial which lasts for a month - plenty of time to backup and restore on the new phone.

All you contacts and phone setting should be on google's servers, no?

If you have android 2.2, the your apps will also be restored when you sync on a new phone.

glenh - really? I know contacts & diary entries are sync'd but not sure about the rest. I was keen to save SMS messages & stuff so went with the backup sofware.

Titanium backup gets good reviews too.

Glen, Hero's can only run 2.1, no further upgrades as the phone isnt up to it.

I;ve purposely kept my phone contacts separate from gmail contacts as I have hundreds in gmail.

Anyway, not to worry, I've exported all the contacts to the sd card.

Cheers guys.

Not that it's really relevant but,

Hero's can only run 2.1

... isn't strictly true. There's no official upgrade path to Froyo, but there's at least one homebrew ROM out there - VillanROM - and probably more.
