+1 for Advanced Task Killer - can help you "kill" selected apps running in the background that are taking up memory, battery power etc.

Quick Settings - really useful app for switching WiFi, mobile data, GPS, bluetooth etc on and off. I really like the auto brightness setting on this.

Aloqa or AroundMe - see what banks, restaraunts, cash machines, pubs, garages are near.

Net Counter or 3G watchdog - so you can keep an eye on your data usage.

AK notepad - for when you haven't got a pen.

Songbird remote - Rip your music collection to pc and contro it all from anywhere in the room.

Robo Defence - Tower defence (is that what you call it?) game.

Goggles - take a picture of something (book, bike, car etc) and it'll identify it and direct you to the web giving you info on it.

Loads more on there - just have a search and download, they're mostly free and you can always uninstall if you don't use em.

-1 for Advanced Task Killer, Android does it's own memory handling, you're fixing a problem that doesn't exist.

AlpineQuest.

If you can get your head round how to make them you can store OS Maps on your phone and see your location on them. The App creates the maps using Multi-map. Brilliant bit of software as the maps are sitting on your phone so even without a phone signal you can still use the maps.

Hmm - some good suggestions on here. I'm updating my apps list as we speak 🙂

And another -1 for task killers. They're not needed

edit: just trying RMaps. This seems to be a very powerful GPS/mapping tool. I like it 🙂

Just takes time. Another similar program is trekbuddy. It doesn't have the downloadable maps within the app like alpinequest (you still have to create them on your pc) but you can add your own CMS which is basically a display for your speed, altitude, etc...
OP- get yourself appbrain much better than the stock market.

advanced task killer. just wondering whether if as you say android does its own monitoring.

i installed it, and then stopped some tasks that were running. so therefore its better than not having it?

Google Navigation is good too - free satnav. Only problem is that it hammers the battery running it. It's still a beta version so not perfect but is better than nowt!

It's fairly hotly debated on the forums, TBQH. There's a danger that you'll kill something critical and whether it's necessary to kill tasks at all is questionable.

It's not necessarily "better" not having it (other than the point above), so much as there's not a lot of point having it in the first place.

Some promising apps on here that I'll have to investigate...

Right my turn:

Appbrain [This is a must!]
Dolphin Browser HD [Huge improvement over standard Dolphin browser]
GPS Test Plus [Paid for app, but very useful & great fun]
Shopper together with Barcode Scanner
Folder Organizer
Street View
Speed Test
Urban Dictionary

/thread hijack/
At the moment I'm after some multi-taking note taking app. What are you lot using?

I use two. AK Notepad for quick note-taking, and 3banana for shared notes; it's synced via convoluted methods to the OH's iPhone, so we can share notes. Fantastic for shopping lists.

No need for the laptop, just click on the Android Market icon on your phone and search away.

For notes I use Springpad, synchs nicely with an external server which means I can check & add more notes when I'm using the main computer.

As the minimum, i'd suggest:
Astro file viewer
Double Twist (music player, better than standard one by far)
Facebook (if you use it!)
Last.fm
Layar (if you think you need something like the yellow pages a lot)
Google Navigation
myPlayer (BBC Iplayer copy)
Photobucket (if you want to upload your phone photos online)
Rmaps (OS maps, but these cache to the phone so you can use it in weak signal areas)
Swiftkey (better keyboard & word predictions than standard)
Talk (used to convert text to speech)
Weatherbug
WiFinder

I like Android Agenda widget too, shows your calendar for the next nn days on a homescreen page.

And when you go on the android market (however you get access to it), check for updates that are available for programs already installed.

Don't bother with a task killer, they can use as much power as the tasks they are killing!

You used one once. Hey, way ta go, in-depth user experience there, then. There's nothing like full, hands-on user experience to get the strengths of something, and that's nothing like it.
By the way, how well does an Android phone work for blind users?

I could not get the 'market' link or the barcode to work either so I emailed my phone the following link and clicked it to install (easier than typing the link on the wildfire).

Further to my last post re Rmaps. I've been using it for a few days now and, when used with Mobile Atlas Creator, it's fantastic and really easy to set up off line maps (google earth or OS, amongst others).

Just need to sort the battery life out now. And waterproof it 🙂

You run Mobile Atlas Creator on your PC, select the area of map you want, the source data (Google, Open Streetmap, OS) and the zoom level "layers". That then downloads the relevant tiles and creates a file - transfer that to your phone, tell Rmaps to use it as custom offline map and voila - free and legal OS mapping even if you haven't got a signal.

I used to use Astro File Manager until they added advertising. I resisted updating it as I didn't want adverts on it, but then one day it refused to work unless I updated it, so I uninstalled it and went for ES File Explorer which I find to be better.

I have recently started using 3G Watchdog for looking at how much data I'm using, but will probably uninstall that after a while as at the moment I only appear to be using a tiny amount of data, so am not sure there's much requirement to track it. This month I have so far used 52MB, but I don't really watch videos or download much stuff to the phone.

The above won't track your used texts and calls - I've not seen one that can do that, but I haven't really looked. I just check my T-mobile account every now & again.

Don't bother with Advanced Task Killer etc. Android is perfectly capable of managing app killing on its own, and running an app killer will only waste battery life.

The Android philosophy is to run the memory full, and dump stuff that's not needed if extra memory is required. The development guidelines are strict and any popular app will be adhering to them.

Tip for new users...hold down the home key and it will bring up your recently used apps. Invaluable when you are skipping between (for example) internet, google satnav and emails.

Whilst we are on the subject, how do I get swype? Does the Desire support it or do I have to trick it?

Are you using the Apline Quest version of the Mobile Atlas Creator? You can tell if you start up your mobile atlas creator does it say something like: "Mobile Atlas Creator 1.7.1/ AQM". Or you can tell by looking at the file format- AQM uses .aqm format. I don't know about RMaps, but I have AlpineQuest and TrekBuddy which use the same method for putting maps on your phone. While both use th mobile Atlas Creator, alpinequest uses the AQM version while TrekBuddy uses the standard creator. Using the wrong version you will not be able to read maps in the 2 programs. I can only assume RMaps is the same.
Just type Mobile Atlas creator into google and you will find it.

The reason I use TrekBuddy over AlpineQuest now is that there is a limit of three maps on AlpineQuest in the current version (old versions didn't have this restriction), whereas Trekbuddy you can have as many as you want. Also you can upload a CMS to give you a lot more information:

I don't think so, but you can make the same (i.e. OS Maps) using Mobile Atlas Creator mentioned above.

Got to the bottom of my problem with RMaps, I was using the wrong version of Mobile Atlas Creator.

However, I'm now investigating Maverick (look for it in the Market on your phone) as this can also use Mobile Atlas Creator OS maps stored on the SD card and you can also record and export your tracks to GPSies.

You can choose from a number of different online sources which MAC looks to in order to create the maps. One of these is Multi-Map which contains OS mapping.
