A guy i ride with recently went to the docs for a prostate check up, nowt wrong with that.....

except that from talking to other people its not the first time this year that he has been. He tells us there is nothing serious its just good to have regular checks.

Is it normal for the over 50s to have an anal probe more than once a year?

[edit: removal of suggestive sexual content for Clinic-Al]

Once a year!

I'm 41 and a half and I know I must go to the docs for a check up at some point. Personally, i have never been probed. Now I'm worried i might find it therapeutic!

being serious then. Can you just phone your GP for an appt for a general over 40 health check, or is that something beyond normal GP services. And what would be checked as part of this (I'm thinking height (low) weight (perfect), blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, 'and so on'.)

height (low) weight (perfect)....

you mean you are too short for your weight?

regarding regular health checks, i might chat to my nurse as ive got to see her to register with the new GPs, next week

I went to my GP when I turned 40 and asked a similar question about a "check up".

She asked if I drank excessively, smoked, did drugs. I said no.

She then asked if I exercised regularly. I said yes.

She then told me to stop wasting her time 🙂

Unless you are showing symptoms of something, I'd just relax and stop worrying.

There is no Over 40 check. I had some health anxiety issues, and wanted an MOT, which i thought would be standard as you turned 40. No such thing existed at my GP.

so the question is, is my mate lying about what hes doing, or has he got some not so good news to share soon.

time will tell eh.

Right, that's another to-do crossed off for the year. 🙂

If I die shortly of some treatable but as yet undiscovered illness, it's you I'm haunting Druidh.

Stress is more likely to affect you than anything else 😉

We offer "vascular health checks" to all aged 40-74.
This is to identify people at high risk of heart disease/stroke, as this is very preventable (BP, statins, smoking etc)
The jury is out on screening for prostate cancer, as it hasn't been proved to actually save lives (I'm prepared to be proved wrong by someone who has used google, as this is off the top of my head)

There is a blood test that can assist in spotting prostate problems, called PSA, Prostate Specific Antigen. I don't know much about it, but it would seem to me to be a less "invasive" way of monitoring a possible prostate problem, and also less subjective - different people might feel different things when they perform a digital examination, whereas a blood test will result in a numerical value. I do know you're not meant to have a PSA done if you have just had a digital examination, as the digital exam may produce a false high on the PSA.

Perhaps your friend has a strong family history and feels reassured by regular checks?

Not quite. DH sponsor the "Health Checks" programme that covers 4 "vascular" diseases. Ask your GP about a over 40s health check and if you still get quizzical looks point them to the Choices article. You won't get a probing though!

It is normal for it to be checked in older patients (over 40's) but only regularily if there are some other symptoms (pain, blood etc.).

Having got through a testicular cancer scare and colorectal surgery I personally find it quite relaxing 😉

You just need someone with a gentle touch and warm hands.......

I'm 52 & regularly see my doctor [at least twice a year] for a blood test
He's yet to ask me to bend over & brace myself

PSA is a SCREENING test.
It's not diagnostic.
It can be raised in cases of benign enlargement of the prostate, urine infections, after sex, and yes after a finger up the bum.
The reason the jury is still out on using PSA for screening is there would be lots of false positives, and the next stage is biopsies of the prostate- not nice. It may also pick up small slow growing cancers which would never cause any harm, but would lead to invasive treatment, so you would be better off not knowing.
As in my link above, go by SYMPTOMS.
If no symptoms, then don't go looking for trouble.

Re over 40 health checks- yes its a government initative, we receive extra funding to do them (have had to employ extra staff), but we're a big practice that has the infrastructure to do that sort of thing. Smaller practices might not be able to, or want to. If it bothers you, shop around and change GPS. It is allowed.

Well, the symptoms can be a little subtle, depending on circumstance - I went through a patch of lots of night-time piddling (not in the bed, I hasten to add) - but not helped by often drinking tea before bed, which I've always done (tho' I've tried to reduce that of late). Likewise I often take a while to get piddling - but I've always been like that. I wound up with a PSA test as a result of hassling my GP after having possible oesteopenia flagged up during a national health screening research project.

A PSA of 6.7 meant a visit from Mr Marigold - turns out it's just a slightly enlarged prostate, but at least now I know. Second test was 3.7, yet to hear results of 3rd. So long at it's not increasing significantly/longterm I won't worry, but I'd certainly rather know than live in ignorance. Yeah, I realise most of us blokes will die with prostate cancer, rather than from it...

And cycling !
