And thoughts about removing anonymous logins...
would you really come here so often if there was no trolling?
seriously?
😕
He first became aware of the phenomenon in the 90s when a friend cross-posted on fan sites for Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, asking: "Who'd win in a fight - the Emperor or Gandalf?" Manuel says his friend sat back and laughed like some "mad scientist looking at insects in a jar" as hundreds of passionate posts followed.
*bows*
Dom Joly:
"One guy tweeted from his work account that he hoped my kids die of cancer. I let the MD of the firm know and the guy was fired. I felt no guilt, he should have gone to prison."
Seems pretty harsh?
I regularly frequent b3ta (the humour site set up and co-run by Rob Manuel) and am pretty seasoned to such comments. It's about appropriateness, one would expect the sort of responses that might constitute trolling there, but it's a pretty sick thing to do to post on someone's FB memorial just to be a knob.
It's one thing to incite a heated debate about whether Blue Thunder would kick Airwolf's ass than to mock the families of a suicide victim. As for Dom Joly, I can't say that I disapprove of his actions. Just because he's in the public eye it doesn't mean that he should expect tasteless comments about his children to be posted on his twitter page.
I agree re. Dom Joly - just that losing one's job/going to prison seems disproportionate.

I'm guessing to the MD it was a reasonable action to preserve the reputation of his company. It was probably gross misconduct according to their policy.

The anoynomity is the key people behave on here and on the internet in ways they would not do in the real world.
I find it pathetic [ ie deserving of pity] that the real them is a bit childish, quite antoganistic and little bit harsh with people when they can get away with it

Trolling's OK, it's the Elfings that ruin things 🙄
Sean Duffy was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison for being only slightly worse than you when you accuse people who disagree with you of being 'a bit like Joseph Fritzl'.
"Virulent, baseless and anonymous internet abuse is as natural as eating, breathing or pointing and laughing at a procession of funeral cars.
Aye its a free speech issue for sure
Free speech comes with rights and responsibility - think this case highlights that "society" is entitled to punish those who cross the boundaries of "acceptable" social behaviour, even on the internet. Failing to do so will encourage that behaviour to spread into wider usage, causing potentially wider repercussions.
Of course, we then have a big debate about what is acceptable.

😯
I mean really? We're now using our judicial system to punish those we don't like? Where's the line? I just can't understand how you go to jail for posting offensive things on the internet? Yeah, it's antisocial, but a crime? Surely it's up to the owner of the board or group to police the content. Otherwise why are their moderators and admins?
It seems like an incredible leap for me to go from comments on a website to hard time in jail.
Whilst trolling can be annoying, I find it helps me to think about things from a different viewpoint.
It also, obviously, leads to more lively and often funny debate.
Much more interesting than a group of sheep all saying
sheep voice
"Baaa +1 to that comment"
"The word comes from a Norse monster"
No it doesn't - it comes from the name of a type of fishing bait.

very true, I moderate my behaviour lots more on something like Singletrack than I do face to face. Just goes to show that somewhere along the line I see some on here as peers I'd like approval from*
*jeesus I'm doomed 😯
A good troll can help to find the true beliefs and personalities of people in a forum like this. Trolling as in the articles is something completely different.
I wouldn't worry on here. This morning I wanted to have a look online at a news story. Underneath people could comment.
Lets just say they weren't the lovely, caring ,open minded people we have on here. Pats on the back to each and everyone of us, no matter what shorts we wear.
Matt I agree.
Junkyard I'll have your pity - I'll take what I can get.
Deary me. Sounds like things are going a bit too far there.
The man said nasty things about me.
So in Dom Jolleys example, if a man said nasty things about him to his face would getting the man sacked (and suggesting he should go to jail) really be appropriate behaviour? Really?
No, of course it wouldn't. Idiots are everywhere. Look at that bloke on telly, errrm, Dom Jolley. He can be quite offensive sometimes, I remember one sketch he did, he was laughing at thin people. I'm thin. Do I post to the director of BBC to get him sacked? Do I say he should go to jail? No, of course I don't, I'm a grown up and can decide to ignore people I don't like. If he tries to punch me because I'm thin that's a different matter but pointing and laughing? Nah, go for it mate. Fill your boots.
