The only way I can tempt the Doris out for a festival will be to precure an airbed. I'm not a fan of the electric pumps and have a perfectly good track pump. Does anyone know of a decent air bed that would take a a good old hand-pumping.
Aerobeds are obviously the dogs and I've seen the explorer

any ideas welcome

Admit it, Doris is really an inflatable doll, isn't she?

any airbed that has a normal pump can be used with a track pump

Don't bother with an airbed. Get a proper 'Thermarest' type mat (Alpkit do some nice ones for cheap) They are far better, more comfortable, warmer, and don't need a pump.

You are underestimating the volume of an airbed relative to the pumping power of a track pump. Inflating it will take ages, leave you a broken man and will heat the track pump up so much it smokes. Trust me, for I have experience in these matters. 🙂

Why not? They take all the effort out of inflating and deflating.

Anyway, you want a self inflating mat instead! 😉

Agreed - after my experience at Mountain Mayhem one year. Ended up blowing it up the old fashioned way with my mouth - it was MUCH quicker and I felt like I'd had a few beers afterwards 🙂

You can get little battery operated pumps though - cost about £8. Weird that you could not be a fan of an electric pump though.

£4 at Argos apparently (though don't know when the offer was...)

I've pumped up an airbed with a trackpump. It had a really small valve hole so I removed the internals from a Bick biro and sawed off a bit of the nib end ot make a slightly wider hole. Then clamp the big end in the track pump and start pumping...

approximately half an hour later the bed was hard and the trackpump was literally too hot to touch!

I have a self inflating mat (Vango) that I got for £15 in an end of line clearance at a big camping store. It packs down to almost nothing and weighs less than 100g or something like that. I personally prefer it to an airbed.

I tried a double airbed with a trackpump and gave up and resorted to lung power instead

Thanks for the advice
We're going for the

£70 at Argos and we'll be able to use it for guests when they come round.
Trackpump idea was in line with an intention to take on less junk.
Your experiences sound like more hassle than worth.
I'll let you know how we get on (me and Doris, the inflatable girlfriend!)
Cheers

Follow up on the airbed

Highly recommended.
Rechargeable portable inflator takes about a minute to blow up bed. Corky little machine.
Airbed inflates to a really high level making it one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on.
Works so well we use as our guest bed at home (at lease 5 times since we bought it + 3 camping trips and many more to come).
Money very well spent.
