So I've tried a finer grind, dampening the filter and the inverted method - how do I stop the coffee leaking through before I've pushed the plunger?
What are you doing with inverted method. I've never had an issue with this.
By not having a big air gap.
never had a leak with inverted method. Wot u doin rong?
Well obviously it only drips through when I turn it over. If I turn it over and leave it it slowly drips through.
By not having a big air gap.
Ok I'll try reducing that so get the perfect gap for the required coffee & water only.
surely you only turn it over when you are going to press anyway?
Well yes, but its contrary to my understanding - otherwise its not pressed is it, its drip coffee.
leave it inverted while it brews, either with or without cap and filter fitted. then flip over with vessel on top right as you want to start pressing. it won't leak this way. but even if it did drip a little, so what?
A little bit of drip through is normal, you don't need to brew for long.
I add a small amount of water to the coffee and mix it into a paste before adding the rest of the water & mixing. This helps temporarily seal the paper filter. Works for me.
If you aren't inverting then putting the plunger in the top stops most of the flow out of the bottom.
are you sure you're cranking the filter holder down enough?
The main thing I like about the aeropress is how simple it is to use, clean and put away for next time. How/why would you try to make it complicated?
I hope you are drinking your coffee at the same time as kicking off these threads, not genuinely fussing over how to make it in the first place 🙂
Cafetiere all the way for me.

Three so far.
Time for the 4th and a biscuit.
Only ever use the inverted method and wet the filter before using it. Never had any issues. Turn it over as soon as ready to press.
Make sure the cap is on securely though. Also make sure there's a filter in there (made that mistake once).
As others have said, the inverted method works and any drips when you finally turn it over to press are minor. Hasbean's brewing guide for the aeropress is here, and uses the inverted method.
A Ha. Yes - did it all a bit quicker with success. No I've got used to it, it is amazingly fast. I find the coffee less bitter than my one-mug drip through device thing which I broke.
I'm on my second this morning. Inverted method, seems quite easy.
@Slowster what a cracking film, thanks for that.
Big Aeropress user whilst out camping, never tried the inverted method before. Will try it out at home later before tonight's session on the bike.
use 1.5 scoops of coffee - then its strong enough it doesnt need to brew really at all!
Only ever used the inverted way. All you do is flip it. Easy! Not many drips.

There is a video somewhere (can't find it now) of the aeropress inventor refuting the inverted method. He claims the aeropress was all about reducing brewing time and therefore reducing bitterness.
Both normal and inverted work for me but got to confess it lives in the van now and a caffetiere and an espresso machine take care of me at home and a bean to cup at work.

That might work for pre ground commodity coffee where you are trying to avoid the ashtray over roasted bitterness but if you are grinding your own better quality beans then a pair of drug dealer digital scales for £10 means you can quickly weigh out 18-22g and go for a longer brew time (and get a better/more developed brew)
Just use it the right way up look how much faff people are going through. 😆
No, use it the wrong way up. Much easier 🙂
Out of interest - do you guys prewarm the cup first?

Yes, I use organic Peruvian baby tears.
I bought mine for convenience at work (where time and space are limited and my Peruvian baby tears/handpicked beans from the bottom of a monkey/barista aren't available). It makes a great coffee - you lot just make faff! I cant be doing with faff in life! 😛

Just make sure you get its heartbeat up with a good tantrum first - body temp tears not quite warm enough for me.

Isn't it well established that coffee doesn't brew - ie flavour transfers more or less instantaneously?
Just like Maverick in Top Gun, you need to go inverted.
I should be clear, I generally drink Kenco Millicano at home! I am a heathen
I CBA with the Aeropress normally. When I do use it (has been months since this happened) I found that the cold cup cooled it down a bit too much
Thumbs up to the inverted method, nice 8)
Just looking at these .. anyone using the steel filter instead of paper disks?
yes. drilled steel filter here, paper filters at the flat.
cant see much difference between them. Both make perfectly good coffee. Avoid the mesh filters though, too open and the coffee falls out.
Normal way up, insert plunger and create slight negative vacuam. Has worked for me, 30 secs brew and plunge!
Nice!
