We will be in touch
Hi, not been on here for a while due to a recent motorbike accident (yet another 'I didn't see you mate' situation), which resulted in: badly fractured left wrist, which has now been pinned and plated, several broken toes to left foot, right arm dislocated, reversed fully from normal position and hanging around 10" below where it should have been (that smarted a bit), and torn meniscus to right knee, which is going to need surgery.
Aside from this, and the fact that my much loved Harley has been written off, I've had to stop playing drums, and have advised the band I was in to find a replacement for me as they have gigs coming up and I reckon I'm gonna be out for the foreseeable future. What I'm asking then, is, has anybody recovered from similar injuries and been able to return to playing successfully? It's early days for me at the moment, but on top of everything else, it would be a major blow to me if I couldn't return to playing the drums. It's the dislocated arm / shoulder that worries me most, as I'm very aware that once an injury of this type has occurred, it can quite easily dislocate again.
Oddly enough Mr Woppit, that's the same example that the surgeon who repaired my wrist gave me when I asked him about playing again!
ouch that sounds nasty. get well soon
in the meantime I can't really offer anything much... although...
I dislocated my left ankle back in 2006, I wasn't playing at the time so it had no impact on my drumming.
being right handed, it's my hi-hat foot so of no great consequence if it had been a problem, although it appears to be fine for hi-hat foot work; I also now have a double kick pedal which, although I can't really use it, that's down to technique (or lack of it) rather than injury.
assuming you're right handed, your left wrist should be ok in time with physio; assuming your right arm has been re-attached to where it should be 😉 I assume that'll be ok in time as well.
New Model Army's drummer Michael Dean has recently had surgery on both his knees and he's back playing again less than a year later
Mitch, sorry to hear about your calamity.
I haven't suffered nearly as badly as you (thankfully - sorry!) but I did dislocate my shoulder in the Alps a while back (over 10 years ago).
It didn't hinder my playing per se, but I still get quite bad pain in my back and shoulder after playing for any length of time (i.e. more than 20 mins or so). I think in part it's due to the way I sit as I tend to 'lean in' to the hi-hat when I play.
It goes away after a spot of rest, or a massage (oo-er) but funnily enough the missus isn't keen when I get back from a gig at 2am...
I think the key is to ensure your posture is correct, you're using a decent throne that supports your body properly (none of this £15 jobbie from Thomann) and that you warm up beforehand.
That said, I suffered quite badly from tendonitis which came about from dodgy practice technique and one of the things I found was following the 'orthodox' Moeller technique properly knackered my wrists (I was probably doing it wrong, but still...). I found going back to a French-style grip (thumb on top) really helped, despite all the warnings to the contrary.
I suppose if you ensure you have decent technique when you're rehabbing - perhaps include some rudiments as physio - you should be able to get up and playing again. I guess you'll only really know whether your mobility is affected when you know, which isn't really very helpful!
and have advised the band I was in to find a replacement for me
you could get one of these
the advantage of a drum machine being the other band members would only need to punch the instructions in once 🙂
ba-dum, tish 🙂
if your kit is anything like mine, the biggest problem you'll have is with the bag(s) of hardware!
hi hat, stool, snare stand, kick pedals, multiple cymbal stands soon adds up to a heck of a lot of weight, which needs proper manual handling technique to move around. especially getting in & out of vehicles and onto stages
mitch........I thought you was in jail..... 😀
nice to see or hear you are ok..ish. heal well mate.
the advantage of a drum machine being the other band members would only need to punch the instructions in once
actually, that brings me onto another point. those that can do that, but aren't drummers themselves, tend to either (a) keep it simple or (b) overcomplicate it.
Far better to have a drummer program it. although he's as likely to insert a suitable trojan horse to sabotage it and get his job back 😉
Of course theres another drummer joke - how do you know when a drummers stool is level? - both sets of knuckles are on the floor
probably no longer applies to you OP 😆
Cheers all! No jail for this lad Ton, though it feels like a long sentence at the moment. I suppose in situations where you're recovering from trauma, it's easier to sit and dwell on the stuff you can't do, rather than concentrate on what you can do. For me, it's having to depend on others that gets to me - I couldn't even wipe my own arse for the first couple of weeks after the accident, and that does tend to test the strength of a relationship, believe me! Luckily, my lovely wife Jude's been there for me throughout, as have friends and workmates. On the bright side, I've got Christmas and new year off, and all that lovely compensation to look forward to! I think I can feel another Yeti coming on!
and a nice new DW Collectors Series kit? And top of the range cymbals too I trust 🙂
No John, I'm still completely in awe of my Truth custom kit. Having said that, a new snare would be nice, probably a dw, though I'm really impressed with a pork pie little squealer vented snare I've seen. I do need some new cymbals, and will probably go for a complete set of Sabians (oddly enough, I prefer their B8 pro range rather than the higher end stuff). Oh, and I need a new tama stool base.
Mapex Black Panther snares are very nice. I have "The Machete", 14x6.5 stainless steel, but other sizes & materials are available. Got it from Rock Factory in Castleford
I've recently got rid of all my Sabian & Zildjian cymbals, I now play Istanbul Mehmet. New one arrived today:

Drum Shop in Washington are about the only dealers in the UK but Thomann in Germany sell them and from experience, deliver them quicker than Drum Shop (and cheaper too in some cases).
Drum Shop do also occasionally have half-price sales. Sign up to their mailing list & watch out for Sale Club. I got the above holey crash, plus 16in China, 16in Crash & 10in Splash in Sale Club all for half price
Electro in Donny have got some good deals on Sabian. The only place I know that are selling pork pie stuff are sound attack, and since the drum stop in Sheffield closed down, Christ knows who are dealing truth stuff now. Liking that holey cymbal John.
I think you're right about Pork Pie; looks like no Truth dealers in the UK now
"For all domestic US orders Truth Drums handles sales directly. To order please call (503) 641-4050 or email info@truthdrums.com. For international orders we have select Truth Drums dealers which you can order from.
If there is no dealer in your country (or the designated dealer is not close to your home) you are welcome to order directly from us using the above contact information.
Thank you for choosing Truth Custom Drums."
Holey crash (16in) was £88 (half price) plus postage. Sale Club is closed for now but may pop up again after christmas.
Here's the full range of Istanbul Mehmet that Drum Shop sell: http://www.drumshop.co.uk/collections/istanbul-mehmet-cymbals - the "Radiant" range are particularly nice
For the FULL range, go to www.istanbulmehmet.com. Some ranges are available in Germany but not here. my hi-hats, for example, are from the Onurhan range, had to get them from Thomann.

Mr Mehmet used to be one of the head designers at Zildjian, before they relocated to the US.
I think there's a dealer in Essex that's started doing Truth stuff, but I've tried their snares and to be honest, didn't think that they were worth the money. I'll probably go for a pork pie big brass, more or less a straight copy of the Ludwig black beauty for about a third of the price.

I *think* that the Big Brass etc are made from generic parts in Taiwan, so you could probably get the same shell etc without the name a lot cheaper - try Worldmax or something like that.
All the best for a full recovery.
The problem with most drummers is keeping them quiet and stopping them doing distracting things when you're trying to sing and keep time yourself. If you can only manage bum tish bum bum tish bum tish bum bum ... they'll be delighted.
That's enough bumming from you Edukator, thank you very much...
