I've got a mac mini at home which has my entire iTunes libray on it (250gb!). After installing the plex media server on it I can now access my music library from anywhere in the world using my iphone + either 3G or wifi.

Thankfully while sat at my desk in the office I can hook up to a BT Openzone hotspot (i.e. free wifi).

Work is now much more tolerable now I can listen to decent music!

I installed it the other day to watch films via Chromecast. avis and other formats not supported, so bung Plex on, play, cast, lovely! (oh, tidy up movie files and folders first ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Nice to get something decent for free.

It does seem good though google music will actually do exactly the same thing and I then don't have to leave the computer on for it to work...

For me, for that reason, it's video where it really shines. Central repository at home for them and then can access them anywhere on tablets, phones, laptops, etc.

I liked it when I installed it, but it has a nasty habit of building massive meta data files on your media and since the app was installed on my primary OS drive which is a relatively small SSD, the plex meta date files and winxs folder were maxing out my capacity. There was no ability to tell plex not to build the meta files. Unless that's changed, then I cant really use it. In the meantime I continue to use standard DLNA service between my Win7 and BRavia Tvs.

Google music and iPlayer does everything else. I dont really need to serve movie/TV files around the country.

I'm a fan, I have my server running plex for films and tv. I then usually watch them via my nowtv box on my TV. I like that I can watch them on my laptop and it'll store how far through the video I am and I can just resume from there on the TV.

Must say that I only really use it for watching active tv series though, so they get wiped quite regularly and as such I can't comment on meta data issues.

Agreed, it is a very handy piece of software. I only use it for movies/tv series stored on my NAS. I have Logitech Squeezeboxes for music.

Win 7 DLNA service can be used by Bravia TVs amongst other things, so no need of additional media service.
