Why do we temd to use roof tiles in this country rather than shingles. is there a building regs reason or is it just what were used to.
Shingles, I thought they were for sheds and Yanks so that it looks more dramatic when filming a film about strong rotational winds??? 😛
On a more serious note, I would imagine it has something to do with longevity similar to why people would sooner see a pitched tiled roof than a flat one with felt...
According to Wikipedia Tiles tend to last longer.
Tiles have an effective life of 50-80 years, whereas shingles will only last 20-25 years or so.
The labour cost of reroofing makes the cost uneconomic. Look nice though.
I think the reality is that the UK is incredibly staid when it comes to house design. If it isn't mock georgian it isn't a home!!! and that means tiles.
There are quicker and cheaper ways of building than brick and block but basically that is all that gets built.
