With the amount of diesel I use a month, I'll be able to buy a great big bag of bugger all with that

It's about £1.30 for me, so I shall be getting one "free" litre per month now!

It's funny when if goes down a penny people cry "It's an outrage that's nothing" when it goes up a penny people cry "It's an outrage it's gone up again"

Could have spent in other areas where it would be of some benefit imo.

I like the fuel duty stabiliser idea. "Lets lower fuel duty and to pay for that we will raise tax on fuel production."

Is it me or will the fuel producers just pass that tax rise on to the consumer thus negating the reduction in duty? Osborne really does think we're all idiots.

Ah but when the price stays the same it's down to the naughty oil companies and not our loving benevolent government.

Milliband is just embarrassing. He's the labour equivalent of Ian Duncan Smith (circa Tory leader years). Only considerably less thrusting and dynamic

No one can beat that bald-headed fool who 'led' the Tory party. No one.

Now hes in charge of the foreign ministry. Jesus wept.

Anyway, its all bloody academic as the oil companies are ramping up the prices knowing we will continue paying. When we kick off they'll drop it back alittle.

They know our threshold is high.

Plus like gas/utilities they'll just throw in the odd tv/press ad saying 'be green'. Dickheads.

Oil companies do not ramp up the oil price, it is set by the market. It's funny that no one ever moans when the market drives prices down. This cut is short term populist politics being paid for at the expense of the countries long term fuel security. North Sea oil is already massively taxed and this just makes it worse.

There was a limit to what they could do with it, to be fair if they'd knocked 10p a litre off I'd be asking what else was cut to fund it. So sure, it's a bit of nothing but that seems appropriate to me.

The only thing that annoys me is the amount of press inches it's going to get and the fact that people are hailing them as the "motorist's friend". Also, I noticed he talked about abolishing the fuel tax escalator... It was abolished when Gordon Brown was chancellor. But the lie's been picked up and repeated so now it'll be considered truth.

Add that to the 45 quid tax saving for a year and the worlds yer lobster

Not even a quid a week, might just buy 45 lottery tickets and see what happens, not exactly life changing is it?

the oil company tax rise will negate this 1p cut, when its passed on

but osborne can say hes cut duty even if hes caused a bigger rise and we can all say how bad the oil companies are

Oil is running out , it is scarce and is in high demand in a market it is only going to get more expensive. You can get annoyed at this and call the green lobby but the simple economics of the situation dictates the price will go ever upward.

I reckon the 2bn could've been better spent somewhere else...

Can somebody explain why the pump prices in my area this morning are exactly the same as yesterday morning, despite the 1p reduction announced in the bodget?

Not that I'm surprised... they'll just say there was a planned 1p rise in the pipeline anyway...

judging by the enthusiastic driving style that more or less everyone seems to demonstrate, i can only assume that more or less everyone thinks that fuel is cheap enough to burn for fun...

personally, i think fuel is cripplingly expensive, but obviously i'm wrong.

Really? My commute has got quieter and people are going a lot slower. It is quite rare for me to get overtaken these days doing about 80 whereas in the past there used to be loads of rep-mobiles flying past edging on towards the 100 (on motorways of course!)

Drivers on my commute definitely seem a lot more sedate these days.

I do 60 miles each way & have re-jigged my brain for optimising efficiency. I stick to 60mph and have changed the way I accelerate, brake & approach obstacles to increase fuel consumption.
Not really calculated the increase in economy yet, but computer reckons I am at least 5mpg more efficient, and if the error in the computer is 'consistent' then it should be about right. Makes sense from the amount of miles i get out of a tank too - 10 gallon tank and getting around about 50 miles more/tank out of it.

Starting up the bike commute now the better weather is here has also helped (saves about 10 miles each way when i do it).

Interestingly the fuel at my local filling station went UP by 1p/litre last night so I doubt, so presumably they're making an extra 2p/litre profit instead.
