What do you think?
Am I allowed?
Well I've got 2 of them and those are definitely in my top 10 of the year.
I haven't heard about 5 of them and don't like the others. I am extremely happy for other people to like them though. 🙂
See I'm nice, me.
as long as you don't mention LCD Soundsystem
😉
Surprised that's not in there actually, especially considering some of the shi...DOH! Sorry.
only 2 for me too, idles and nadine shah.
I'd rather be locked inside a shipping container and be forced to listen to someone gargle a succession of Steps cover versions, accompanied by a tuba, than have to endure a whole album of Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile.
A lot of the rest of it is is suitably 'on trend' and a bit meh. The Big Thief album is ace!
See, now when I first heard of Thundercat I though, ooh, they sound interesting. Turns out they're a he and he's not, he's Craig David with 80s video game tones. I'm old though.
SEE! LOOK! It's Binners who's horrible about stuff! Everyone have a go at Binners!
And kayla1! Gits!
(Thundercat makes me laugh.)
Alt J is definitely in my top 10 of the year but as for the other choices?....mleh...... Given the fact that i religiously listen to Gilles Peterson/MaH/Nemone etc you'd think i'd be jumping all over thundercat but i just don't like listening to him.
(Thundercat makes me laugh.)
He's Possessed to Skate, thats why.
Everything on that list was a bit meh for me, but I've spent most of the year reassembling my XTC on vinyl collection, one charity shop at a time.
Meh. No mention for Algiers or Baxter Dury?
I was surprised that Slowdive, War on Drugs and Jane Weaver weren't in there.
than have to endure a whole album of Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile.
I rather like it 🙂
Only have alt-j.
After a quick listen of the top track on iTunes of the rest, I wasn't immediately grabbed by anything.
See, I like Kurt Vile and I like Courtney Barnett, but I really can't get on with Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett.
Hm.
Nadine Shah is probably the only one I'll be listening to in 6 months time. Sampha was ok.
I really want to like Thundercat - in fact I love a couple of his tunes - but unfortunately I just cannot stand jazz-fusion, so that pretty well limits the amount of Thundercat tunes I can stomach in one go.
If he was a bit more like Craig David I might be more up for it... 😉
edit-
in the interests of being positive, some of my favourites, for those who give a flying one:
Pumarosa - The Witch (indie rock)
Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun (goth/metal)
Andrea Belfi - Ore (soundscapey weirdness)
Harvey Sutherland - Expectations (live disco/boogie fun)
Hyetal - Youth and Power (kind of experimental pop)
Hannah Peel - Mary Casio (synths and brass bands)
🙂
Ironically it's the album where they spend so much time trying to appear to not care, yet it must have been heavily produced to get that laidback, stripped back, we don't care, honest-guv vibe.
Nadine Shah is the only one in the list that appeals to me. Saw her in October - far better live than the CD version.
Courtney Barnett, I thought she was good, from what I heard on the radio, then I saw her live. Very dull.
Doublepost
I've only got the Alt-J album.
Ah thundercat.
I’d never really heard of them/him before I got a drunk Friday night text from a mate in about April saying he’s playing manchester Albert Hall in November so we bought tickets. Forgot about it after that.
Then in May to avoid gcse revision my son decided to learn bass guitar. He asked for and got a bass for his 16th birthday. Suddenly we start hearing thundercat album played all the time. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago son comes with us instead of mates wife to the gig. Declares him the G.O.A.T and really enjoyed it. Me and the missus weren’t so impressed although did see Stuart Maconie at the back of the room.
I don’t think I’ve heard thundercat being played on 6 before today but perhaps I listen to the wrong shows.
My favourite album of this year would be let them eat chaos but that might have come out last year.
I've only got 'Relaxer' too, and although it's got some great tracks on it, it's not one of their best imo.
None of the rest float my boat.
I really like Courtney Barnett, and I thought she was much more vibrant live than on record, but Kurt Vile is a bit too much like Courtney, so the two of them are rather over-egging the pudding, so to speak.
I’ve never been able to get to grips with alt-j, something about them, possibly the affected vocals just irritates. Big Thief I saw at Greenman, and I met her after she did a set at the Rough Trade tent, and I was charmed by her, and really enjoyed her main set. Got both albums signed as well.
Phoebe Bridgers album I’m keen to get, I like what I’ve heard so far, Father John Misty, sorry but he’s just the 21st Century Elton John, with less impressive lyric writing, and he’s far too far up his own ass, I heard the interview he did with Radcliffe and Mackonie, and I could understand their desire to want to punch him repeatedly in the face!
Thundercat isn’t my kind of music, and I can’t get to grips with Nadine Shah, although I like the odd track.
Kurt Vile is bloody great.
I’d have had at least one King Gizzard album in there.
And Orc from Thee Oh Sees
