As a detectorist (yes, really) this interests me as we have a long history of customising and subverting the meaning of coins over the centuries.

Counter stamping, vandalism, hole punching and many other more inventive methods of subverting a coins intention.

I guarantee that I'm not the first to think of this.lol

I'll be looking at these Brexit coins with disdain.....and interest when they appear.

The need a load more of them I suppose as that’s what most of us will be valuing our houses at...

Just to ensure the full pointlessness and futility I trust that the lowest bid will come from a Mint in somewhere like, say, France.

50p on one side, 1€ on the other? Should approximate the exchange rate.

At least their shape means I can clamp it in my pillar drill to stick a bloody big hole through it should I end up with one

Or just explain that you are right. A 50p/1€ coin implies an exchange rate of £1:€2.

50p/25c would be the right way round.

But that aside, is this really what we have come to as a country? Commemorative coins? Commemorating the government's complete inability to negotiate?

Commemorating the government’s complete inability to negotiate?

But the man in the propaganda film said it's all the EUs fault that we have to leave with no deal? You know, the film with the recipes for rat stew and squirrel pie.

Yeah, I think he and I both know that - rest is bantz, innit (unless SR has been taken hostage by Farragers)

I'm down with bantz.

I'm also of the feeling that we are in an age where accuracy counts.

"Peace"?

When they're spending the whole summer doing their best to portray the rest of Europa as the enemy?

If I have the misfortune of receiving one then my intention all along was to permanently deface the reverse so that it shows the 12 stars of the EU flag, and return it in to circulation.  Or tell the shop staff politely that I do not accept it and to give me a proper coin.

If it was a commemorative coin you could pay £10 for it then take it to the beaurau de change and get 40 euro cents for it. What a great exchange rate.

Another stupid idea.

Everyone knows we're going to be using wheelbarrows full of £50 notes by the end of August so no one is ever actually going to see one of these.

If any grown ups get given any of these coins in change, surely the best (and most amusing) thing would be to immediately donate it to the Greens or LibDems or the campaign to rejoin should this nonsense go ahead.

It should replace the 20p coin, and be similarly sized. Probably worth scrapping the 1p & 2p coins while we’re at it. If we’re devaluing for Britain, we might as well prepare for it properly.

Can't they just give stuffed toy unicorns and rainbows to all children born in the first year after a date if/when we officially leave an EU that makes far more economic sense for far more of the UK population?

Why on earth would they think that commemorating something 50% of the population are dead against is a good idea. Are they genuinely that out of touch? Or are they in denial? I suspect it is that they honestly do not give a crap about what 50% of the population think.

It's a damming indictment of the opposition when they know they can rub this kind of crap on the face of half the electorate and still probably get elected.

They should replace the 50p coin with 52p & 48p coins.

I’m completely opposed to Brexit, but if you add those five pence pieces in to the mix this could be the one and only positive thing to come out of the whole shit show!

Given that most of the great and the good of Brexit don't understand the concept of change anything smaller than a £20 will never have crossed their palms.
It's hard to set fire to coins in the face of the poor don't cha know.

I was going to post something similar. Although maybe they do get it and hence why it's a 50p coin.

Who is the statement if intent supposed to impress? The greatest ever act of self harm committed by a government is hardly going to impress anyone else.

It will be just like one of those old foreign coins you occasionally find. Interesting but pretty much worthless.

Well at least forgery is off the cards. I mean, it will be worth so little who will want to? You know they’ve. It made any 20p coins for a while. The new 50p will be the 20p so naturally we’ll need a lot more of them.

Apparently scrapping and recycling them

The cost of designing and producing commemorative coins is met by the Royal Mint at no cost to the taxpayer.

Err it will cost the taxpayer as the Royal Mint Ltd is 100% owned by the treasury.

I'm assuming they'll be working with material anyway, its just that this material looks different to the usual starting point

if Brexit shows us anyhting, it's that we're definitely not a 'modern' society

It seems that what 52% of people really want its the return of ration books and black market chocolate

We send the EU £350 million a week.
Let's literally burn it instead!

Could use them to fill that ditch that Johnson has decided not to die in.
Possibly on the edge of the 3rd runway at Heathrow.
