Hello, if my phone has an established 4G connection, does it guarantee a minimum level of service? Will the phone automatically detect the fastest connection and default to that regardless of whether that is on 3G or 4G, or will it revert to 4G if its available regardless of speed?
The phone in question is an iPhone 5s using an App that may be susceptible to packet loss.
Probably depends on the phone, but preference of service I believe comes first, so 4G, then 3G, Edge, GPRS etc. It will prefer the signal quality usually.
Speed is whatever that service can deliver for the signal quality and infrastructure.
I've not really found 3G or lower to provide quicker than 4G. Though I have found all services provide zero data in poor signal areas.
Packet loss is highly likely with a mobile phone, especially when moving around and signal switches between services or drops out entirely.
Might be some phones will drop a 4G if it thinks 3G is going to be faster, but it would have to know the 3G signal is good and fast data in advance. Unlikely it would as it's attached to one signal at a time.
using an App that may be susceptible to packet loss
What is the app? If it is susceptible to packet loss, surely the data would be passed using TCP so individual packets can be lost with no loss in overall data stream?
