Does it mean emergency or extra fast?

Edge, it's a speed part way between slow 2G and fast 3G.

I sometimes get 3.5G Is that just a little faster like it suggests?

Yup, 3.5G is much faster (typically broadband speed) but only works for phones that have HSPDA capability. If your phone has HSPDA it will use 3.5G automatically
