i saw joy division play live in b'ham when i'd managed to get myself into a nightclub aged 14.

they were supported by up and coming local act dexys midnight runners.

hard to say which of the two were more woeful, even to reasonably sophisticated 14 year old ears.

ended up being a fan of both mind.

Saw Joy Division supporting Buzzcocks in 1979 in Sheffield. They were absolutely storming. One of the best bands I have seen live - and according reviews they were not at their best that night.

Saw them live here

in a two thirds empty venue-it was a performance like no other I have ever witnessed.Ian Curtis was totally absorbing and utterly engaging, uncomfortable to watch ,yet leaving you unable to avert your gaze for a second. It was like observing someone's complete mental and physical breakdown played out alongside an other worldly alienating aural backdrop. It totally fubarred my head in.
And for a quirky Manchester connection did you know that Bernard Manning was actually one of Rudolf Hess's prison guards after the war...not sure he gets a mention in the song though 🙂
