come to the conclusion that my 4 yr old dell, with a buggered battery, and whch refuses to connect to the internet, has to go.

as a graduation present from the grandparents i got £300, and i reckon a laptop would be something nice to get.

i need it for;
internet (stw, porn, shopping etc)
word processing (CVs, job applications)
store photos (but not manipulate)
play music (in a basic form)

i know i can't afford a mac. i want windows 7 (def not vista, XP is too old now anyway).

i want it to work reliably for a few years, i would love for it to have a good battery (the dell one lasted about a year before it was shite). not fussed about graphics (i don't think), the most complicated game i would play is solitare.

should i get new? or reconditioned (like what pc world sell (yes, i realise i probably shouldn't buy from there))

ta

btw, i'm a computer idiot, and don't really know what most things mean.

check ebuyer out, some great deals to be had there thats where i generally go when i need parts to build my computers

your right about the graphics card, unless your an avid gamer or you plan to watch HQ movies etc then a standard graphics card will do the job just fine

something similar to this should do you http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225691

As above ebuyer, personally I would stay away from Celeron processors...IMO

Found this on the used Dell website, http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/dfo/df.aspx?refid=df&s=dfo

Looks pretty good to me. (You don't need the 64bit version of Windows, but this was the first one that came up.)
Or the Ebuyer and Linux.

agreed with ebuyer or dell. dell do student discount i think so maybe your student card is still valid? or find some one who has one that is, they also do discount to employees or companies and military, so you should be able to get discount. ebuyer are normally good as well, and aldi occasionally have some good spec ones going as well.

the wireless is a bit flaky so i got a usb wireless thing for £13 job done
bat life is ok

bottom isnt flat and has vents and stuff ,so not so good ventilation when on your lap etc

Screen folds out to about 145
runs on xp

HP mini

better bat life
bottom flat vents and access points are at the rear and sides
screen only gos to 120 ish
runs win 7 and a tad slower to boot up

I've got a sony vaio P series which is as good as new, win7 its teeny tiny but lovely and also takes a sim card should you fancy using it online whilst out and about? box n everything, bought from John lewis about two months ago (probably less) paid £370 (black with a couple of raceface stickers on the lid)

A netbook won't suit you. The screen isn't big enough for lifesize pictures of naked asian girls.

Carfone Warehouse do very good deals on laptops, bit of a loss leader as they hope you might buy a phone when youre in there. I got a 13 inch Asus for £349 with 3 gig of RAM, a 320 gig hard drive and Windows 7 64 bit system and a 10 hour battery, they also do good deals on Dell.
