[Closed] XT/SLX incompatibility?????

Just been trying to fix a new front mech - a job I've done many, many times before. Decided to use a new SLX mech, top pull, top swing. I retained my 2006 XT L/H shifter. No way could I get it to set up correctly. Set the big ring correctly and the little ring was out. Try the little ring first and it wouldn't go into big ring. Wasn't the stops set wrong, and I was using new cables.

After a couple of days of frustration I took the SLX off and replaced it with a new LX mech. This worked perfectly first time, and needed a minimum of tweaking.

Looking it it objectively it seems that the "throw" on the SLX is different to that provided by my XT shifter. Has anyone else come across this, or does everyone buy new shifters when they buy mechs?

Are you using 3 rings? I think some (all?) SLX mechs are for double and bash

Yes, using three rings. Bought it from Merlin, in the shop, and was told it would fit.

Two SLX mechs available.

One for triple chainsets and one for Double and bash, this one has a significantly shorter cage and is limited to a maximum of 36 tooth rings.

You may have bought that by mistake????

HMMM. Went into Merlin and asked for a SLX mech. The guy just looked round the back of the door, and pulled this one out and said "That'll do".
I thought it odd that it wasn't in any sort of packing, even OEM has a bag. Even the green spacer was missing. I suspect that someone may have taken it back having had the same problems. It's now scratched so there's no way I can take it back.

Anyone want a double and bash front mech? Cheap!!!!!

read the model number of the mech and go to www.shimano.com to find out for which cranks it fits.

"seems that the "throw" on the SLX is different"

I had this issue. Examine the fitting instructions diagram carefully looking at the way the cable attaches to the mech. I pulled mine through straight and had the same 'throw' problems. The cable has to be guided round the side before going under the clamp.

Its possible its a double/bash only one, but I'd hope merlin would know the difference. I'd imagine its that you've routed the cable wrongly like I did to start with

Granted not the same situation but no problems here with an X7 shifter and SLX front mech.
