If I buy some nice pretty 10-speed or even 9-speed XTR cranks can I fit XT 10-spd chainrings strainght on it?
Cheers.

Can be a tricky fit.

I have a set of XTR 980 24-32-42 triple chainrings for sale if you fancy them, lightly used,

Is the BCD the same? I thought they were specific on XTR.

Same BCD AFAIK, but the cranks are shaped to match the outer ring, dunno it it causes issues with other rings.

The old M970 takes normal (64/104) rings but does need spacers on the granny ring to stand it off a bit. Older ones had their own BCD I think?

I use a Shimano M980 XTR crank as a single setup. Have used works narrow wide and a hope 10 speed chainring with no issues.

Thanks George, but No thanks. I don't actually own an XTR crankset at the moment. I like the look and weight but would not want to be tied to expensive XTR chainrings as I replace chainrings every 6 months. I'm just wondering if I did get an XTR crank arms, could I put XT rings on it?

I have an XTR M970 with a standard Works Components thick thin ring. It definitely works with normal rings. The weight isn't far off the current model either.

As Northwind says.

M970 is fine for single ring but the granny ring offset is all wrong - you can space out a standard ring or get an XTR-specific one.

I've used a Shimano M980 XTR cranks for a few years now. It's surprising how often a set of unused rings appears on the classifieds. I've never had to trouble CRC for a set.

Just changed my rings, and bought a new set a couple of weeks ago to go in the spares box for next time; £75.

I don't believe XT would be any cheaper
