A mate of mine managed to trash his XT Shadow + rear mech last night by picking up a stick in it and snapping the mech in about 3 places.

Question.
As this mech is now only fit for spares, is it possible to remove the clutch mechanism and "retro fit" it to my own XT Shadow mech? Has anyone tried this yet? 😕

Only fit for spares for an identical mech

Yeah just cable tie it on - if you don't have access to cable ties sticky tape will work fine.

No sticky tape available here, I was thinking some chewing gum might hold it in place............. 🙄

On a slightly more practical note, surely the rear part of the mech (from the parallelogram backwards (clutch, jockey wheels, etc.)) would be interchangeable unless they made the parallelogram a different size?

The cages fit differently on Shadow and Shadow+ mechs. Have a look at the exploded diagrams -

So I very much doubt you can do what you are thinking.

Since the mech is fine from the parallelogram back would this work?

OK I take it back - you might not be completely barmy - those bits do look very similar
You may get way with it who knows?

I wouldn't know how to separate them - are there pins you can knock out?

Maybe try it on the buggered mech first

I've never seen one taken apart at those pivots. I have just been looking at mechs in the workshop and although it does look like the front and back bits would fit together, I am not sure you would get the pivot axles out and back in.

The only way to get the pivots out would be to drill a small hole and drift the pivot pin out. It would be messy and could actually damage the picot making it loose. Its possible, but Im not sure its worth the effort, plus no guarantees that it would work reliably, if at all.

Hmmmm........... It was just an idea based on the fact I could get the parts FOC. I dunno if I fancy wrecking a perfectly good rear mech in the attempt though. I might keep it for a future project incase I get a rear mech that's busted the other way round to use as donor parts.

Thanks for the comments all. 🙂
