[Closed] WTB tyres, which ones?

Hiya Chaps,

I've had a bad run with tyres of late, I'm after something for all day riding which is generally pedalling up for steep and technical descents.

I've enjoyed MM and HD pairing in Trailstar and DHF/DHR2 in 3c.

What would be the equivalent in WTB tyres?

Vigilante Tough High Grip?

Cheers

Ricks

Vigilante is like the MM. It depends on what size wheels you have as to what compounds are available.
29 is only available in dual DNA where the 27.5 and 26 are both available in the gravity DNA compound. I have used both and the dual DNA was fine on wet roots and chalk.

They can be incredibly tight to fit depending upon your rims, I think Stan's actually just say they won't fit their rims. I'm liking the vigilante but can't help think the trail boss would be I improved with a high grip tough version.

Vigilantes and Trail Boss are £8/13, depending on wheel size, plus Nineline are £13 and Nano £21 at DFS, search the model name to find them. 😉

I ride a mixture of terrain in the Tweed Valley and swear by the Vigilante TCS Tough High Grip on the front and TCS Tough Fast Rolling on the back for most. If it gets grim then the front gets a Warden. If really dry/hardpack then the back might see a Trail Boss but there is little rear wheel braking traction on anything grassy/wet!

Vigilante Tough on the back is a good choice. Didn't get on with it on the front as much, unless it was really muddy/loose.

Oh I meant to say...
Vigilante on the back if it's very muddy
Keen to try trailboss in the rear for dry

I prefer a shorty up front if it's muddy, not tried high grip vigilante tho

Vigilante is a great tread but the "no soft rubber" thing for the 29er is annoying, really hurts it compared to the mary and shorty and imo doesn't really have any benefits, no clue why they did that for the 29er in particular but not the others. But very tough. As a horrendous conditions rear it's fab.

DFS?

The bike place that has more sale than sofa shops, currently a mathematical-related sale.

I'm not going to type the word, I've noticed an uncanny relationship between me mentioning their name regarding sale goods at good prices and then the price goes up. 😉

Right now i'm on Breakout "high grip" front - Trailboss "tough fast" out back will swap the 'Boss to Vigilante when it gets wetter.

I don't understand

You've used DFS in another thread quoting some tyres I've been after for a while.

Give us a clue!

Hows the durability compared to Schwalbe and Maxxis. No idea how, but I've punctured three tyres, which have then resulted in pinching the bead and destorying the tyre.

Punctures in the cap main body of the casing.

Vigilante tough is the best rear tyre I've ever used, only reason I've not used it on the front because they don't do the high grip in 29. Stupidly tough casing but weighty, amazing grip, not paid more than £15 for one yet either.

WTB tyres are way tougher than both Maxxis and Scwalbe in my experience, but the TFC are pretty heavy, so should be tough, really...

Anyone tried Nineline TCS? Do they last when used for mixed tarmac and off-road duties?

I've got Vigilante front Trail Boss back as my FS bike setup right now. Both Tough: High grip up front and Fast on the back. The Trail Boss copes as well as might be expected in mud, but I have a Tough Fast Vigilante to go out back when the bad stuff really happens.

I love this combo so much 🙂
