Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem. I've been running a 2.4 WTB Judge rear tire with a Rimpact insert. Absolutely impossible to remove, tire seemed to be welded to the rim. I've found WTB to be tough in the past but always doable, but the insert meant I couldn't fold the tire over even to get any purchase with a lever. 2 blokes at the bike shop failed miserably also. Ended up having to cut the tire off, which isn't ideal.
Anyone had a similar experience, and been able to unseat the tire?
Did you try standing on the tyre and pulling up on the opposite site of the wheel? I've had to do that with a WTB set up even without an insert!
When I got similarly stuck I saw a video where one of the insert manufacturers recommend placing the wheel on an open round dustbin so that you can forcibly use all your weight to drive the tyre off the rim all the way round, before then popping it off with 2 levers simultaneously.
I was sceptical having heaved and sweated like nobody’s business for the past hour.
Tried the technique, found it hard work, but within 15 mins job was jobbed
Nice, will give both a go. The idea of having to cut off a tire every time it needs changing is ludicrous
I’ve had a few problems with foams and wtb tyres. My fallback trick is to lay the wheel on its side, place a very(!) blunt and strong (eg motorbike) tyre lever vertically against the sidewall as close to the bead as you can, and then push down. Sometimes I have to put most of my weight into it. Seems slightly easier to do this at the opposite side to the valve.
I’m liking the trend towards tougher trail tyres eg Exo+ as for most riders they’ll make foams redundant.
Although foams do offer a great get-you-home option as you can ride on the punctured tyre for miles...
Out of interest why would you run an insert with one of the toughest/supportive tyres on the market bar a full DH casing?
had something similar but not as bad sounding with a michelin wild enduro/sixth element rim and vitoria airliner(same tyre and airliner came of a dt rim without much trouble). had nearly given up after an hour of trying when i got it of, was one last attempt with both feet on the bottom of the tyre, knees against the middle of it and all the finger strength i had left that finally got it of.
i'm hoping next time i can remember the way i did it and it won't be as bad.
Bigmantrails - an insert also protects the rim plus in somewhere like the lakes even a DH tyre isn't puncture proof
The only tyres I've ever had a problem removing have been wtb, even dinky little gravel tyres...
I wouldn't buy them again!
The trick is definately to use a blunt object against the rim/bead with alot of force to unseat in one place then work it round. I stopped using WTB tyres along time ago for multiple reasons. The rimpact is so much more than puncture protection!
Had similar issue with Continental tyres and an insert just last week. I paid 25 euros or something for a CushCore bead dropper lever. It's pricey, but it's solid and is really designed for just that, dropping the bead with an insert and it did it very well. The tyres were not going anywhere with my usual technique - even the stand on the tyre and twist the rim technique which is usually enough.
WTB tyres, probably just for "comedy" value looks to be on the very, very low end of the sizing. Putting them on and taking them off is always a struggle. Insert or no insert...
But on the other hand tubeless inflating is a doddle...
Swings and roundabouts I guess.
Just swear louder and push harder...
Cheers!
I.
I was hoping WTB tyres had loosened off a bit since the Vigilante I had a few years ago.
That almost made me cry when I got a flat in the cold and it wouldn't seal.
Just taken delivery of a Verdict Wet in tough carcass. Not gonna use an insert as it already weighs close to 1.4kg - which seems quite enough for a front tyre.
Yep, exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago. Took me an absolute age to get the bead away from the rim. I had to be really methodical, prizing little bits here and there, levering the tyre lever sideways to force it out. I got a right cob on! That's the only time I've ever struggled using Park levers. Must have been mucking about for the best part of 45 mins. Properly put me off the tryes, it'd be a nightmare trying to pop it off on the trail. Replaced with favourite Maxxis/Schwalbe combo.
This was a Trail Boss on an Enduro Wide with a Rimpact, btw.
Edit: in addition, it was also an absolute bastard to get seated in the first place.
