I’ve a lovely orbea occam which is not getting as much use as I would like partly due to where I live near Cambridge. It’s currently got Minions front and rear, I’m hoping to buy a second set of wheels and but something a bit quicker on for flat bridleway rides.

Would WTB rangers fit that bill? Open to any brands as long as they set up tubeless easily. So many tyres to chose from and most review focus on the gravity side of our sport. I will probably stick with a 30mm rim. Cheers

Ranger is a great rear tyre (have them as all year back end rubber on my two main bikes, but accept that for a lot of riders they might not be fun in the slop). Bloody terrifying on the front though in any conditions - never again. I have 2.8s and they come up a bit round on a 30mm rim but still totally usable.

I think they're great, fast rolling and grippy, but I live in a flat dry place.

What are you running up front colournoise? I did have trailboss F and riddler R which I ran in most conditions, but the minions really are a step up.

Might head down the LBS but don’t want to spend more on bike tyres than car tyres.

I have Vigilantes on the front of both bikes that have Rangers on the back. Pretty good all round front tyre. Not quite as grippy as the DHF on my old Rocket but not far off.

Vigi paired with a Ranger here as well. And my Rocket has a DHF, spooky.

You could look at 2.6” Forekasters on 30mm rims at both ends for flat stuff. Aggressive XC tyre I believe - I’ve got one to go on the back of my new hardtail and it has good volume but looks like it’s going to roll quite fast but grip ok. I wouldn’t put one on the front for the steeper local tech stuff but for flat / tame stuff I reckon it would do the job.

Cheers, might have a look as my lbs stocks maxxis and schwalbe. Although both abut spends at least I could look at the tread.

I got my Forekaster fairly cheap online - under £40 I think.

For context her are a couple of picks of the tread next to a Magic Mary 2.6. The Forekaster has significantly smaller blocks but it’s quite widely spaced so I think it should shed mud ok.

Edit - the Forekaster is also about 300g lighter I think

Edit edit - if looking at Schwalbe you could look at Nobby Nics

Thanks for that Joe, they do look well spaced. I thought Nobby nics might get mentioned, seem good for everything.

I've used 2.25s and now 2.4s on 30mm rims and while you'd not expect much from them in damp conditions, they're pretty good XC all-rounders ime. Good for oak woodland/sandy pine needle forest/southern chalk byways anyway. Use them a lot for all day XC and weekender loaded riding.
