I imagine all the snow and ice has gone, however spoke to cyclewise yesterday and they said that the ranger has not made a decision as to if they are going to fully open the trails yet

A mate went up there about a week ago. Said the bottom half of the south loop was ok, but the rest of it was still mostly covered in ice. I guess the blue loop would probably be ok.

He didn't think it was really worth the trip from Lancaster as it was a week ago.

T'was snowing an hour ago. Just a shower though. Glorious sunshine now and all weekend apparently.

Just a thought - now I have seen the roads near here and how the freeze/thaw action has trashed them, how does a manmade trail like Whinlatter cope? Does it loosen up the surface at all and wil that mean it will destroy itself over the next few weeks?

That's why it's shut. With thaw and some rain it'll settle back down again, but if it's ridden when it's all loose, it will be costly repair time.

The riding in Borrowdale doesn't share these problems and is 'reasonably good'

Was there today, 1/2 blue, all north red and top of south red all still closed, polite signs requesting folks leave them until erosion/ freeze-thaw issues have settled down, which is probably a good idea. However, if you're not local or passing, probably best heading for borrowdale, back o' skiddaw or grisedale bridelways instead. New snow only an issue on the high fells.
