i have an 11 speed SRAM GX shifter - will this mean i can move away from the matchmaker so i can run shimano brakes?

Usually there's a standalone clamp in the SRAM boxes for shifters and brakes, but guess you might not have the box.
There are also third party options to integrate Shimano and SRAM.
