Thinking of building a set of lightweight wheels.

I am reasonably heavy at about 95kg but have never totalled a wheel or even knocked one badly enough to need anything more than a slight true.

I would like to try a lighter wheelset on a bike as I think a 1lb of rolling weight could be easily saved over my current wheels (Magura Comp/DT Onyx).

I have been looking at the Stans Olympic rim. I think this is now a discontinued rim.

What are these like in use?

Will it be too light? They are about 100g less per rim that the Flows that I have never had any problems with but I'm guessing thats because they are chalk and cheese!

Can anyone advise?

Mine have stayed true for years, I am 85kg but light on kit, they've survived many small-ish jumps.

The replacement is slightly lighter no? And there's a 290gm stan's rim?

Hmm.

Cheers Al.

I must be looking at an older version as I am sure I read the rim was 350 - 360g ๐Ÿ˜•

I've got some, and I've weighed up to 94kg.. although I am light on kit. I have them built up with Sapim Laser spokes and they've been brilliant. Ragged them pretty hard on XC race courses and they've never even needed tweaking.

There is a lighter rim, the 'race'? 75kg limit tho iirc.

Get some Crest rims - much better option for you. They'll last ages, and you really dont need the Olympic unless you're racing.

In fact, I use Crests for XC and Endurance racing.

I had a set of Olympics on Magura hubs, which I swapped for a pair of Easton Havocs on here. The new owner loved them, last I heard. I couldn't stand them. They were professionally built, and nice and tight with it, but they were not happy when pushed hard. That might be due to the stiffness of the rim, or its width, but I found them squirrelly. I had another pair of wheels at the time - Hope XC on 317 - which I tried with the same tyres on the same bike, with none of these problems. The Havocs, incidentally, came in at pretty much the same weight but I find they're a lot more fun to ride on - not too heavy, and nice and stable.

I weighted about 83kg at the time. I've never trashed a wheel except as a result of coming off the bike, so I was trying to find the lightest wheelset I could get away with.

If you don't mind a bit of squirrellyness, don't push your bike hard into corners, like XC racing and don't mind being restricted in the size of tyre you can fit (2.1 was about as wide as I went), then by all means go for the Olympics.

Incidentally, I tend to buy rims on width and weight now; I'm running a pair of 355s on my singlespeed which have none of the wibbliness of the Olympics, but are still nice and light. I've got a pair of wheels now that are pretty light (1890g) and pretty long-lasting, and nice and wide: Hope XC rear, Hope Pro 2 Evo front, DT Comps and 355s with brass nipples.

Might I suggest the replacement for the 355, the Crest? These come in at 340g claimed, nearer to 350 actual, and are nice a wide - which would make for a stable tyre, too.

[Edit] Buttscratcher said what I said in a fifth of the space. :)[/edit]
