Anyone tried this?

I'm thinking of using a bog standard shimano square taper BB to hold on something like a DMR Chain Reactor.

I know they are designed for use with external bearing BBs but it seems like it should work with an old fashioned bb...

Yep Not a problem

I used to use a Dmr chain device with square taper on my old lts

Most chain devices came out before external bbs

+1 no problem.

It might work a tiny bit better with an e-type square taper BB though. It'll take account of any slight shift in the chainline and has a slightly longer thread too. I don't feel it's absolutely necessary though.

Cool. Do you know who makes e-type square taper BBs? I have not seen them before.

Shimano should do all their regular models in an e-type version. I got one a couple of years ago from Merlin I believe, but they shouldn't be too hard to find. Iirc they just have the same number followed by 'E' ('UN54E' for example).
