[Closed] Why do I want a 29er?

As per the title really. My mate has two (both on-one) and I've had a play and I'm pretty sure I'll get one soon. I've also popped into Planet X a couple of times to see the Scandal in the flesh. The 19in fits nicely enough but I'm not totally convinced by the colours though!
So my question would be, is a HT 29er for me? I'm 6 foot three and 16.5st. Mainly do xc and Cannock Chase/north Wales trails. I've got a C2W voucher for £1000 and up to £500 on top of that to spend? And I'm open to suggestions!
BTW I'm currently riding a beat up Claud Butler Cape Wrath.
Thanks!

Wasn't convinced till I rode a Niner, very, very nice. Tried a Tallboy as well and wasn't quite so convinced, felt a bit unwieldy to me.
So in conclusion, maybe......

I bet it'd be great - I'd get one if I had the spare dough/time to ride it.

You want one because they are better than the alternatives.

I have two 29er Scandals! Newly converted to 29er's and would never go back to a 26er! You will not regret it! I got second hand frames and had them painted the colours I wanted and then build them to my spec! 😀

Check out my forum to see them! Great bikes!

Alright already! So, SLX with carbon fork, XT race or buy the frame, fork and wheelset and put my own bits on as I go?

And no, I'm not ready for singlespeed yet!

Got a second hand scandium scandal frame for £80 I've not ridden my expensive full sus 26 for about 3 months now, I think it is is horses for courses, riding Snowdon this weekend and the full sus will come out, but for day to day riding round where I live I find the scandal has the snap and stiffness of a hardtail with the comfort of a 100mm travel full sus bike.

I think it's something you get or not and depends on where you live and the local terrain a great deal

Last november I bought this:

Loved it to pieces, great bike and awesome VFM, but I ride four times per week and wanted a hard tail for the longer distance rides and after careful consideration (about a 3 minute test ride) bought this in February:

Loved it to bits and just felt so fast. Went to Llandegla and my best effort round the black was 1:45 on the Cube and on the Niner 1:15. Upgraded the brakes to Hope X2's.

In March I hired beardy for the day and this happened:

Afte that I was sitting with a bag of frozen peas on my knee when my mate rang me to tell me my LBS was giving some good deals on Trek and he was buying a rumblefish 1, so on my way home I made an emotional purchase and bought this:

29ers are without a shadow of a doubt so much better to ride, stable at speed, roll over things, don't seem any harder to pedal and I call them a skill enhancer whilst others call them skills compensators. I've been riding 18 months now and would class my self as average, but confidence on it has shot up.

So the Cube's up for sale and last week bought another 29er, a Cube Pelaton R**d bike 😛

Don't see why not. Would be a great bike for covering lots of ground, mountain jeep tracks that kind of thing, possibly with some road thrown in.

If I get one it'll probably be fully rigid, might have hub gears and drop bars, would definitely have full rack mounts and could very well be used for the TDR 🙂

At your height you will find the 29er fits well.
I doubt you will go back to 26ers.
And shit they are fast too.

I suppose the real problem is beardy won't train you if you turn up on a 29er, you would have made it on that! 😉

just sold mine, and bought a 26" Anthem X2...make of that what you will.

I just figure that 26" full sussers are the new niche, and I wouldn't be seen dead with anything as common as a 29er 😉

Leon,
I see more 26er full sussers than anything when I'm out with the lads! Oh, and they all ride 26er full sussers as well! I'm the only one riding a 29er and they have all had a go on mine and they love it! They all want a 29er now! 😆

I bought the Rumblefish 2 as a broken knee jerk reaction on the way home, he sent me a message on facebook and I told him the news and got a comment back saying throwing more money at it will work even on a freak bike!!

Going to do another course, that one was one on one, will do one of the weekend courses and he said I can take my freak bike if I want. The tide turns...

I was joking about nicheness (although wait until next year!) - I don't really care about that.
I liked my 29er hardtail, and there's definitely a place for something like that. The trouble is, in my price range they are too heavy. My SS 26er weighs 20lb, so every geared HT I can afford feels like a heavy lump. I test rode a Stumpjumper carbon. It was nice, but weighed 24.5lbs!

Also, there's no way I'm changing from 26" for local riding, since it's all about twisty singletrack and constant accelerations. No matter what anyone says, either wheel size is a compromise somewhere, and for me, 29" just doesn't work as well locally (it's fine, just not as good).

I would have probably bought the Anthem X 29 if I'd had the cash, but it's too much money. 26" wheels haven't suddenly become sh!t. I don't think I'll be too disappointed.
