If you wanted steel of a comparable quality the Croix de Fer is not the way to go as it weighs many, many, many pounds. A Shand Stoater would be lovely.

Harrogate is in that Yoikshyre.. It's 4hrs from London for me and yet I can get there 🙄 (and 6 from sunny Hampshire Coast)

Theres this amazballz bit of tech called a telephone, and if you are dexterous enough there are buttons on it to press and you can listen and speak into it and you'd swear you are talking to God or something.

The reason I said it was there is because it's already built and has all the bits on you'll ever need, some nice bits, some shiny bits and it's been sitting under their widescreen TV for a couple of months so mebbies.. just mebbies they'll do some sort of deal on it..
ya
neva
knaa
d'ya.

HTH 😆

Yeah, certainly. (My phone appears to have no "buttons" though...). But I wanted to go and fondle it.

Possibly not but it is at least pretty enough to justify it's weight.

if one was to have the same requirement as the OP, but had feet in the 'steel-is-real' camp - where would the collective hive point to? CdF? Others?

How about the newly announced Kona Roadhouse? More info

Thanks IMN, that looks good too and I have a bit of a soft-spot for Kona. Had a look at the Cotic Escapade on their website last night which looks great value for the Frame and Fork at £350. So many choices... 😕

Found a deal on a Stigmata frame... any opinions on this build?

Santa Cruz Stigmata
Kinesis Crosslight wheels
Shimano Ultegra groupset

Is a bit.

More the budget wheels I'd have issue with. 200 quid wheels on a 2 grand frame seems wrong somehow. At least the wheels are easy to upgrade when you have the cash.

Id go with SRAM Force CX1, but I don't want a 1x crank for on the road, I reckon it'd spin out too much.
just being lazy with the wheels. Should do a build on JRA.

I'm currently having the same dilemma / debate.

I fancy getting a cross bike although I don't really need one. Definitely an N+1 purchase.

I rather like the look of this -

Like the look of that Saxon Cross. Seems quite weighty though. Wondering where the heft is.

Shimano hydraulic STI are blinking marvellous, the shifting is exceptional and braking hard from the hoods on a gravelly descent with perfect control is witchcraft if you're used to callipers on the road.

Not tried the sram so can't compare.

I didn't look at the weight of the Saxon Cross to be honest. What would you expect the weight to be at that kind of price? What are you comparing it with?

Seems pretty light to me. Lighter than the Tripster build here (pdf file)

@dbukdbuk - http://www.awcycles.co.uk/bikes/road-bikes/cyclocross-bikes/whyte-saxon-cyclocross-bike-2014.html 2014 model cheap 🙂

Oooooo that is a good deal. My size too.

Having said that, I much prefer the 2015 models internal cable routing and 1x11 gearing.

But the 2014 model is reduced by £800.......

Why do folk like internal routing?

It sucks the boaby in every way.

Not just looks bettteeererrr, but keeps all the stuff inside out of the way of the mud n crud. Ok, some bikes have BB exit points but on the whole I think its much better. Also, if yo carry your bike a lot, it saves your arms getting sliced.

DezB, chosen one yet ?

Interestingly, a couple of shop sites are showing the 2016 Whyte Saxon Cross (although not in stock), even though it's not actually on the Whyte web site yet.

http://www.rockandroadbikes.com/whyte-saxon-cross-team-2016/p809

Seems to be £1999 which is £400 cheaper than the 2015 model. May be due to using own brand fork and hubs instead of Easton. Looks nice though. They've gone for the wedge type seat post clamp which is nice and seem to have removed the cable stop for the front mech which is neater. Looks nice.

Honestly, no! I'm completely stuck. Still can't decide Ti or carbon. Full build or pre-built.
Nice decision to have but it's driving me a bit crazy!
Friday, going to make a trip to my local Kinesis dealer, see when he can get Tripsters in (late Aug, I believe).
Considering a visit to the Enigma folk too.
But then there's the Stigmata... wibble

ps. the Whyte: Oooooo that is a good deal. My size too.
I saw a 2015 for the same price! Can't remember where though. Will post up when I find it.

It may be the standard, non "team", Saxon Cross that you saw. It looks almost the same but retail is about £1500.
