2012 Scott Spark? If for no other reason than it looks awesome.

Cannondale scalpel and or when it's available the scalpel 29r (this one I'm going for)

there is only one - Epic

Spark is good, but reviews are saying the shock is rubbish

You'll just get people recommending their favourite! As with all of these! You really need to try lots and buy your favourite. The Spark looks awesome on paper, but you really had to use the TracLoc lever a lot to get the most out of the old one and I understand the new one's no better. Not a problem per se, but some people (like me) hate fiddling with stuff!

Love my Trek Top Fuel, so much so I'm keeping it for a second season, first time in 6 years I've not changed!

Have a look at a Canyon Lux MR.

I've ridden the 2011 editions of:
Canyon Lux
Trek Top Fuel
Specialized Epic
Cannondale Scalpel

Despite owning a hardtail, I can say that all those above would be on my short list for a new XC race machine.

I've only ridden Canyon Lux MR, bought the complete bike. For a bit of XC racing but mostly marathon/multi-day it has been great.

Do you have a race license? If you do you can get a frame under their sponsorship programme for £1200 rather than £1470.

Giant Anthem X
Trek Top Fuel
Scott Spark

I got the Anthem X as an all day ride, with a few enduros thrown in. Love it to bits. Everyone is going to say thier own bike, but you'll put together a decent list to whittle things down a bit.
