Am replacing the axle on my rear XTR wheel having sheared it in two when removing a cassette. Anyone know what kind of grease I should use on the ball bearings? Only grease I have is lithium. Can I use a spot of that? Thanks.
It will do OK.
HTF did you shear the axle?
Ta. I must have tightened the cassette too much when I installed it, ripped it right off.
Note to self, don't buy any more high end factory wheels with non-standard parts. They break and cost a fortune to replace......dont ask me about XTR spokes.....
I used something called Bullshot when I replaced the freewheel. Was quite expensive but was recommended and does seem to be doing ok. I snapped the axle too when removing the freehub, and both freehub and axle were replaced on warranty.

😯
Isn't it a titanium axle??
Grease is grease, pretty much. I use Silkolene RG2 (purpley-red stuff); it's reasonably thick, and doesn't degrade the rubber seals.
Love the RG2. Bit cheaper than normal bike stuff as well. Get it from motorcycle shops (silkolene RG2 btw)
