I've only ever used my phone for route finding in areas I'm unfamiliar with but it's expensive and fragile so I'd like to get a gps. I'm most interested in being able to upload pre-planned routes, route guiding, and mapping. Other features are a bonus. What's the most reliable, easy to use and reasonably priced one you've used?

In rough order of cost: Garmin Etrex, Dakota, Oregon, Montana. I don't have experience of the newer manufacturers so can't comment on those. You can load either OS or free maps on the Garmins. Not sure about "route guiding", I think you mean turn by turn directions. I've not tried it on my Oregon.
Edge Touring will give turn by turn if using highways (including bridleways, RUPPs and BOATs) but Garmin's software is not a lot of cop.
