I'm just about to start a new build, and have accumulated most of the parts I need. I'm going 10x3, with a 10 speed x9 rear mech, 10 speed x7 shifters and an xt chainset with dynasis 10 speed rings. The question is, can I get away with a 9 speed xt front mech? If not, can I use a 10 speed Shimano or do I need to buy a 10x3 SRAM one?
My head is hurting.
Come on, someone must know? Hope I don't have to run SRAM - I've just seen how much more they cost!
A wishful bump...
have you looked up the pull ratios?
You can use SRAM or Shimano for the front. But you may get better shifting with a 10 speed SLX or XT. The cage is shaped to work better with the narrower chain and closer ratio chainset.
Thanks Hingy. So the front SRAM 3x10 speed shifter is essentially the same as the 9 speed ones? Good news if so.
Yes, Fronts are interchangeable. Rears are not. ๐
Groovy, thanks.
