I'm after a new chainset for a mmmbop build. Was looking at the SLX double and bash Merlin/CRC have for £89 but they're out of stock.

Any suggestions for a decent <£100 double? I looked at some of the FSA stuff but their range is a minefield. Just want something fairly solid that can take a few hits but doesn't weigh a ton.

Looks like Wiggle have SLX double and bash in at £104 so only just over your target. I can vouch for the fact that the SLX setup will take a lot of abuse - taken chunks out of my bash so have hit stuff pretty hard. No issues or new rings needed in about 18 months

Still SLX, they're light-ish and very strong... Lex's has the double at £90. You need to find a very good reason to buy a crank that isn't Shimano really.

x2 SLXs doubles in the house, just great! Have made others up and none have worked as well.

Oh, I've got an XTR double in one bike and an SLX double in the other... Only differences are weight, and the XTR isn't as well finished or easy to fit. Exactly the same in operation though.

2nd hand XT?

Just bought some SKF bearings as despite chronic abuse from my 220lb landing on them to flat they will not break even wit the leverage from some burgtech flats!

after killing my XT cranks last weekend.. unfortunately one of the pedals came loose whilst out riding.. by the time i noticed the damage had been done.. completely threaded the drive side crank to the point the pedal fell of in my hand lol... so Ive just purchased a Saint D&B for £160 from CRC... its a thing of beauty 😀

Pedals self tighten through precession. If it comes loose, the thread's been pulled out.

What I mean is, they won't unwind of their own accord. You probably went over a heavy bump or something and the thread let go.

SLX. The bash is a bit ugg, but the cranks are lovely and the larger ring is 36t which is useful.

I had a Stylo 2.2 double and bash on my Rock Springs, it was leagues ahead of the awful Evolve XC I had before but which was okay but not a patch on the SLX double and bash I upgraded to earlier in the year. SLX is stiffer, lighter, has a longer BB life and a more reliable fitting system.

I liked my SLX double so much I bought a triple for my second bike.

I've not tried FSA though and have to agree that their model range is harder to fathom than even Truvativ.

I was just about to put my Saint double and bash up for sale, it's been ace I must say, still looks great and worked a treat, stiff as he'll SSing too, non too heavy at 1070g with the bb, same material as xtr but more of it and steel pedal inserts for strength.

Only reason to change is I'm gonna put a 2x10 xtr on

Seems like every 'bop owner has gone SLX. Eye for a bargain or a flock of sheep.!?

SLX crank is faultless in my experience. Looks good. Bash is a lump but has taken plenty hits without hassle. Great price.
Out of stock?.....I wonder how many CRC frames came with a side order of Shimano crank though?

Cheers.....from a SLX/mmmbop owner....baaaaaaaa. 😉
