my Google skills are weak today
edit: are new slx pads just xtr pads? I've found some that look similar
I wonder if anyone is doing aftermarket jobbies yet?
Some anodised fins would be cool 🙂
Unless you truely do smash the gnar, why not just get normal pads instead?
fair point, but are they the xtr ones?
Sometimes, people just like the shiny.
I could probably cope very well with normal ones, but I likes the shiny.
Superstar - S5 is the code - without the fins. Sintered for the Peak. And yes, they do seem to be the same as the XTR based on that. Aren't fins very expensive? I'm guessing they'd make a good job of trapping grit making any cooling advantage very marginal...
The fins, in the UK, unless you're bashing down Fort Bill, do very little.
They just look cool.
And shiny.
I have some SLX brakes that I just fitted, and knowing that I go through pads a bit quick I already got some superstar S5 brake pads ready.
the superstar ones dont come with the split pin though, and I dont fancy trying to bend back the ones that came with the original pads.
I can see some split pins for shimano on ebay but I am wondering if the caliper will accept any of the proper threaded pins instead, anyone tried this yet?
Anything labelled 985 or 988 XTR pads will fit the new 785 XT or 666 and 675 SLX callipers.

I used the same split pins in my last magura brakes for 5 years. If they get bent, just straighten with pliars.

Yes. The SLX calipers have the threads machined into them to accept the XT scew-in pad axles.
yeah just re-use them. The pins are steel wire not aluminium that will snap easily.
As for fins - I believe Shimano has managed to get a patent on them so aftermarket is unlikely but a company relining a shimano finned backing pad would be possible - but it's probably far too much effort to try and get old finned ones back for relining.
thanks both. I think when they wear out I will try and find a set with a proper threaded pin just so it is easier to replace out on the trail, and then use cheapo superstar ones after that.
I also see A2Z make a gold alu threaded pin but Im not paying £5 for 2 microscopic bits of metal
I'm sure I read somewhere that SSC were working on some finned ones.
