Apologies if this has been asked a thousand times before although a quick search didn't bring much up.
I'm off to the lakes for the weekend in May (so weather should hopefully be ok) and I'm after some tyre suggestions?
I currently run rocket rons f&r which cause me no issues on the flats of thetford forest (my usual haunt) however I'm thinking something a bit stickier wouldn't hurt.
Thanks in advance
James

*s***** 😛
It's a bit of a can of worms this but depending on what you're riding/how hard you ride you might want to think about a dual ply on the back. I've got away with it lots in the past but on one or two occasions it's almost spoiled rides with the amount of flats people have got so better to put up with a bit of extra weight IMO.
Butcher Grid on the front and Dual Ply Minion on the back?
At the very least EXO tyres and if you are a hard rider dual ply rear. Of the zillion tyres I have tried here in the Lakes I always end up back on Minion DHF 2.5's front and rear. Other tyres will work to a point but lighter tyres seem to tear or constantly puncture.
Any tough tyre will be good and a tread that works well in dry, wet, mud, loose rock, sharp rock etc etc in other words every possible terrain and condition in one ride!
What duir said.
2-ply only needed if you are very fast or very hefty IMO.
In fact i can flog you a pair of on one tyres with the exo sidewalls for £28 posted if you're on 26in still? Tried and tested in the lakes.
Under inflated Nobby Nics did not last long, so whatever you choose make sure it's pumped up!
FWIW, went back with High Roller II and that was fine.
Bontrager xr4 great all-round tyre as long as your not to thuggish!
I'm going at the weekend. I'll be going with minion dhf up front and high roller 2 on the back. Both exo. They seem to be everything you need on a trail bike to me. Ardent exo on the rear if you need something faster rolling.
Depends a bit on your weight how fast you ride and if you are on a full suspension. I would say you want tough sidewalls something like Maxxis Exo, Continental Protection or Schwalbe Super Gravity.
If you are a really heavy fast rider you might need dual ply.
Tread wise something like 2.5 Dhf front 2.3 HRII rear. Trail King 2.4 Front 2.25 rear. Chunky Monkey Front and Smorgasbord rear would be cheap if you are sticking to rocky routes and not thick mud. mm front hd rear if you want Schwalbe.
Normal Minion on the front but not a heavy or super fast rider- only ever seen one slashed tyre in the lakes and it was not mine.
Whatever on the back - its an On one Smorgasbord i think.
I am both heavy and super-fast. 😀
Ok, thanks for that. I'll be on a 26" 120mm full suss and weigh in at 10 stone. I'm not the fastest of riders either and will be part of a reasonable sized group so the more puncture/pinch resistant the better!
Ideally I'd like something fairly fast rolling so I can make use of them back home too.
Me and the other half have ridden Nobby Nics loads of times in the lakes in all sorts of weather. No issues.
At that weight I dont think you need dual Ply personally - same weight FWIW
I use minions on all my bike depends what you want but I like consistent grip - bit Mleh in mud but every tyre is a compromise
As for fast rolling IME that tends to mean less grip
Hans Dampf up front in Pacestar form and a Rock Razor on the back, both in 2.35 size, if you don't use them again, you know you have tyres for serious riding, cos you will want to go back 😛
Looks like a combo of a minion upfront with either a minion, ardent or high roller out back.
As all 3 of the rear suggestions have come from different people, does anyone have experience to compare them?
Other than that, i think i'll have to start shopping. Was looking to go tubeless too, I assume they all blow up and seal ok too?
I live in the Lakes, currently Spesh Butcher and Purgatory Grid on the FS.
Chunky Monkey and Smorgasbord on the Hardtail, both sets are Grid / Exxo type, I'm fairly light but a bit clumsy, rarely kill tyres.
I used to always use Minion / HR combo, I much prefer Minion or HR on the back to the Ardent, much grippier in the wet.
Hi,
I still ride in the lakes weekly -I used to live there n ride daily on bridleways vs trail centres ! I use both hardtail/full suss depending on the route, but I always seem to use a Minion dhf on front n either the same on the rear or something faster rolling. I usually run higher tyre pressures than is fashionable but I rarely flat however I am quite light n smooth n know the trails i ride very well.
Enjoy !
