i've somehow managed to acquire more tyres than i have wheels for:
2 x Panaracer Fire FR 2.4
1 x Continental Baron 2.3
1 x Schwalbe Hans Dampf 2.35
1 x Schwalbe Muddy Mary 2.35
1 x Specialized Butcher 2.35
and now i'm not sure what the best combination is. i'm thinking of keeping the Panaracers running as a pair, running the butcher and baron together, and then running the Schwalbes together but i'm not sure if the muddy mary would be better at the front or rear.
or should i try a different combination of the tyres i have?
On my 2015 crush I run 27.5
Summer - ardent 2.25 f&r.
Winter - ardent r 2.25, minion f 2.30.
Best for what riding, what terrain, what conditions?
Best for what riding, what terrain, what conditions?
ideally for general all round riding.
the places i frequent are usually places like lee quarry, gisburn, llandegla and coed y brenin.
i know the baron work better in the wet so i'd like to match it with the butcher
i'm not too worried about the panaracers as i've had them for a long time and i know theyre pretty good in all condition if a little bit slower.
my main concern is with the schwalbes as i'm not sure which of them would be best suited as a front and which one as a rear.
the reason i ask about other combinations is in case i get told that both the schwalbes are better as rears and that i should mix one of them up with say the butcher
i want to fit the schwalbes on but i've read elsewhere that the muddy mary is great as a front and the hans dampf is be better at the rear....or should i switch them around?
any advice on this would be appreciated thanks.
The magic mary front and hans dampf rear is a good front and rear tyre combination for all round riding with a priority of going down and where your tyres can actually dig into something.
Keep that magic mary away from the rear unless you're putting one on the front too and riding down something very steep and soft.
I'm liking the magic mary (Vertstar SG) front and HD (trailstar SG) rear. I'll be running MM front and rear in winter (Trailstar compound rear). Covers most situations in my experience
Mary is a front tyre only unless riding DH all day long...put the Hans Dampf on the rear.
Butcher and Baron have similar treads so i'd just stick whichever is the wider of the two on the front.
That leaves your Panaracers to be run as a pair.

thanks...thats what the plan was as the HD is already on the rear wheel and i wanted confirmation that this was right as i couldnt be arsed taking it off again... 😛
the MM will go in the front tonight.
also thanks to everyone else for commenting!!
I recently swapped a HD for a MM and the grip is great, HD suffered in loose stuff the MM just sticks.
I also swapped a HD on the rear for a RR and surprise surprise, there is no grip on when braking with the rear. 😆

Racing Ralph or Rock Razor?....if you mean Rock Razor then i agree entirely, i got lured in by a glowing Dirt review and put one on the back with a Mary up front for a local level DH race...oh dear, no brakes whatsoever!....went off course into spectators, ran wide on every bend....disaster, threw the bike in the car and drove home after practice even though i had a Minion with me if needed (and it was needed!)....no tyre i've used has been as bad as that, i suppose on rocky, hard trails it makes sense but for UK riding the window of opportunity for that tyre is narrow to say the least.
Now Racing Ralph on the other hand is ok as a rear, i used a Nobby Nic up front and the Ralph out back on a hardtail a few years ago and it was great through the summer.
