Hi,

Have a list to try out that controls the resistance by iPhone or laptop:

Zwift - lots rave reviews but looks boring.

Tacx desktop App, can’t get this to respond to the turbo and will check my windows and delete the BT connection.

Ful-Gaz - like the video idea, not responding to cadence.

The Sufferfest - but won’t control my trainer by Bluetooth, unless I use my laptop over Ant+.

Trainerroad - which reminds me of the gym equipment screens.

Thanks!

Zwift and only Zwift here. Curious what you're looking for specifically and why you think it looks boring, you can literally race against other people and gradually climb the league tables.

https://zwift.com/events/

I'm about middling C class, because I'm lazy and like donuts 🙁 Nothing has driven me like a proper race though, there's no way I could coax myself into sitting at 165bpm average over an hour if it were anything else.

Picking a random example -  https://www.strava.com/activities/1213865772 - more brutal than any real rides I had that year. I'm 37 and my max is roughly what I had that ride.

There's a whole load of them on the DCRainmaker site: er, this. Along with a bunch of individual app reviews. Not sure if there's a more recent round-up, but it's a start.

Not sure that Zwift looks any more or less boring than other apps btw. It's the (anti-)social interaction that makes it interesting rather then the graphics or the scenery, but I guess it depends how you're wired.

I use the Sufferfest.. via a USB ANT+ dongle to my PC.

The videos are cheesy.. and verging on ridiculous at times..!
But they just work for me.. the workouts themselves are great, The sillyness takes the edge of the utter tedious hell of turbo training.. and their mostly hour long format fits in quite well with my life.

I found Zwift really boring as well after the first 5 minutes of oooo.. im riding underwater through a tube and up a volcano.. and the few structured workouts i tried on there just didnt grab me.. or match the effort to the visuals very well..

Oh it's much more painful than that.

Well, what did you expect?

I used to have trainerroad + sufferfest videos (I think sufferfest now have their own app and trainerroad have their own video's too) and quite enjoyed it.

My gym used to have something a bit like Zwift 10 years ago, it was good fun turning yourself inside out racing against the ghosts of other members, but it wouldn't make such good structured training (IMO) compared to stuff like trainerroad/sufferfest which give you structured training plans and then real metrics you can track.

From my research most apps can only control smart trainer resistance by ANT+ not Bluetooth.

I use Sufferfest, once you have done the the 4DP fitness test then the work outs work quite well for me.

Besides Zwift, I've got One Lap and Virtugo beta to try, hopefully tomorrow.

TBH I would get the ant+ dongle, they're cheap enough that they shouldn't be the deciding factor. And whatever you get will be better on a big screen (hook up an old TV anything 1080 will look OK on a PC from a distance).

Some people just stick a box-set on and use trainerroad (or similar), I couldn't focus on tow things at once though.

Did Golden Cheetah ever develop its training section?

Been using zwift on my ipad

would prefer to use sufferfest app but it won’t control ERG function on my turbo

what dongle would I need to use it with a laptop? Can anyone point one out on eBay?

You can combine trainerRoad and the sufferfest videos. as fr as I'm aware they sync so you can follow along to the videos and trainerRoad takes care of the resistance changes.

If that still doesn't work for you then what would you want from your ideal app?

Will sufferfest not change the resistance?

Just Google ANT+ USB asap. I bought the Garmin adapter and an extension cable so the sensor sits on the turbo leg and picks up my cadence sensor too.

I use Zwift and tend to ride for about an hour. I'l pick the hilly routes mostly unless you get boring Richmond.  Leith Hill in London is a good long 20 minute test including the first part of the climb and is the mountain on Watopia.

Thanks, will give some of these a try.

I bought a cheap £15 Ant+ usb unit last week from Amazon.

Some Bluetooth apps do control the resistance but Sufferfest does not unless you use Ant+.

I used the iOS Tacx and uploaded my gpx from my Garmin.  The resistance did kick in over Bluetooth.

The trainerroad looks good for intervals.

My laptop will transmit to my TV but also will try some airplay apps.

FulGaz was great, lots of videos from the all over the world of iOS only.  Controls Smart ERG turbos too CIA Bluetooth too. Hook up the iphone or iPad. Or beam to tv or hmdi it.

Not much in the way of improving FTP unless you plan it yourself, but was very smooth and easy to use. Videos in HD.  You can add a family member - handy/cheap.

Probably best for winter slogs and avoiding boredom.

Zwift controls your Smart ERG trainer by Bluetooth or ANT+ but found it a bit boring. Also doesn’t support internal graphics like intel so beaming to a screen without hdmi looks slow.

Was on Sufferfest - great videos on my laptop and big TV. I need to do my (lack of) fitness test to see where I need to aim.  Was a bit of where to do I start in here.

Found the commentary inspiring and stunning scenery.

Doesn’t control ERG unless using PC via ANT+.

iOS updates have caused problems for Wahoo ANT+ adapter users. Forget smart control for iPhones or iPads. Fixes coming in March... Unless you have manual resistance - why use this for erg trainers?

Rouvy was easy to use but the U.K. videos are helmet cams which move around way too much - don’t use if you travel sick lol. Carp. Does control smart trainers by Bluetooth though.

Zwift was compatible via Bluetooth to control ERG. Ideal for iPhone or iPad.  Not sure it’s for me but it clicks for a lot of other riders.

Trying out Trainerroad tomorrow. Like the idea of doing my planning and playing a background video.
