removing the chainrings off a Middleburn crank?

I'm trying to put on a singlespeed chain ring on my hard tail and have pulled the crank off to find there is some sort of lock ring holding the chain rings on. It looks like it needs the sort of tool you might need for the external bottom brackets on newer cranks but that's a guess
