Going to a trail center , will be billy no mates, what lock would you recommend?
For many years I have worked on the principle that bike never leaves sight.

I do a lot of riding around the countryside and stop off a various places. Being somewhat paranoid of having my bike nicked I carry around a Kryptonite New York 3000 D lock; it's rather heavier than I'd like but should be pretty secure. I did try exploring lighter alternative but cable or chain locks with a similar 'Sold Secure' Gold rating seem even heavier so I guess it comes down to what sort of protection you want.

Bike never leaves sight here too

No lock that you can carry in a backpack with survive an attack with a modest pair of croppers

Modest=easily stashed under a jumper

Anything reliable will be too big and bulky so I dont bother and never leave the bike

I've never carried a lock while off-road, trail centre or other

I've occasionally asked someone to keep an eye on it if it's going to be totally out of sight

I carry a cheepie coil one in my backpack, like this CRC linky

It wouldn't survive more than a cursory glance form a set of bolt croppers, but its just there to keep the bike(s) secure while im taking a leak/buying bits/cake.

although saying that I once left my keys at home and locked the bike up in a marrina. Just a cheepie 15quid cable (14mm or so) and padlock for halfords. Took a packet of hobnobs into the workshop and asked to borrow some bolt croppers. Bearing in mind these things weren't cheep, and were being used by a guy more used to hacking appart big boats chains and riging rather than a pidly little lock. It still took 15 minutes to get through the cable.

Took me one chomp with a pair of bolt cutters to get through a fairly chunky cable lock when I was reclaiming a bike...

Don't like leaving mine unattended, but use a chain + padlock when I do.

Not sure I understand the question though?: If you're at a trail centre can't you leave a big chunky D-Lock in the car/round a fence?

Good idea! I am being dumped at trail centre for the day, so why not leave lock there. Another obvious solution, when pointed out.
