[Closed] Opening the reservoir cover when replacing disc pads

I notice that the instructions for my Shimano disc brakes instruct you to remove the reservoir cover before pushing the pistons back in when replacing brake pads. Why is this and do I need to do it each time I replace the pads? I understand that if there's too much fluid in the system and the pistons are proud, then pushing the pistons back in with the reservoir open will release a bit of fluid. However, since it's a closed system and if the pistons were flush from new then surely there's enough space in the system to push the pistons in with the reservoir closed?

Just trying to understand how it all works.

The only time I've ever had a problem is if I've topped up the fluid with part worn pads fitted, then there's too much fluid in the system for new pads.
