What? Gravel tyres ...

[Closed] What? Gravel tyres with a mud bias in 700x50ish size?

After increasingly frequent unintentional off-piste excursions on my gravel bike, I accept I need tyres with deeper tread for current conditions and throughout winter. My current tyres are a bit too skitey at this time of year where I ride.

I'm looking at the Schwalbe G-One Ultrabite in 700x50. TBH they look like what I need, but I don't pay much attention to what's available in the gravel tyre market and wondering if there's others similar to this I should consider?

Looking for:

- 700x50ish/29x1.8" max;

- more grip than my current Clement Xplor MSO 700x50mm;

- tubeless;

- more bias towards muddy forest track than tarmac, but not utterly pish/draggy on tarmac.

My current tyres:

Ta.

@zippykona, SKS Edge AL56 bodged onto a fork with no mounts/eyelets etc. Hugely more rigid and no rattling compared to SKS Chromplastics I used before.

These are probably a little narrow for what you want, but I'm impressed with both the mud-grip and the rolling speed of the Vittoria Tereno Wets 700x38.

I hear good things about WTB Sendero

I really like my Pirelli Cinturato Dry on hard surfaces and road but they are not suited when there's a bit of mud, so have something of the same dilemma. The Cinturato Mixed Terrain supposed to be good also....

Likewise, but disappointed with the rate of wear.

@hardtailonly, I've got used to the comfort of bigger-volume so yes probably a tad narrow for me. Tread pattern looks useful though.

@honourablegeorge, that Cinturato Mixed Terrain tread pattern remind me of Smart Sams in 700 variety which I found decent but couldn't bodge them tubeless with any success. Possible option.

Cinturato dry went on my Hunts without levers, inflated with a track pump, and lost no air, spot on as far as tubeless goes.

Schwalbe G-One ultra bite in 45mm? £60 for a pair from merlin at the moment, I'm running them on my Camino. They hold pretty good road speed and are very capable in the slop.

@momo, thanks - I'd seen them but hadn't spotted the multi-buy offer! Just unsure on the width, I know it's only 5mm difference but I know that can make quite a difference in volume/comfort.

I've found them in 50mm for slightly more, however they're Performance line rather than the Evolution line: rated as slightly less durable and slightly worse rolling resistance. And, for better or worse, they're tan sidewalls. Probably the best I'm going to find though.

Been running 700x45 Cinturano M for over a year on my Diverge - impressed by their durability having not punctured in that time/ good wear. Not an out and out mud tyre, but give good grip - most of my riding is on the ‘rough’ end of gravel but they’re not too bad on the road either.

I have Recently put Teravail Rutland 650b 47mm on my bike for winter. Replacing Terrano dries of the same dimensions.

They are fairly narrow compared to the tyres i took off. But so far they seem to hit that roll ok grip ok sweet spot.

They do them in 700c

Lots of good reviews on the web

– 700x50ish/29×1.8″ max;

Loving your maths here... 29x1.8" is approx 700x45mm... 700x50 is near as dammit 29x2.0"... 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m looking at the Schwalbe G-One Ultrabite in 700×50. TBH they look like what I need

I don't think you'll be disappointed... But probably go with the 45mm version for greater mud clearance and performance over the 50mm. 👍🏻

WTB Raddler here… in G2 casing. Excellent in the slop (well, for a gravel tyre.)

Yep, just as well I don't work with numbers. Oh. (I meant 700x50 / 29xwhateveritis - translates to 1.97")

Thanks. Luckily mud clearance isn't an issue for me as it's not a real gravel bike - Planet X's version of the Sonder Broken Road Ti. Despite the lower range model, I'm probably going for the 50mm for the extra comfort.
