Just catching up with a little light blog reading and read this article on the Fat Cycle Rider blog.
Never heard of a saccade before, but it explains a lot.
Basic premise is, humans didn't evolve to drive cars, no great shock there, but how to cope with our deficiencies in our sight makes for an interesting read of you have a few minutes. And the chance to tell your mates in the pub they are crap is never to be missed.
Edited to clean up the link, god knows what happend on my tablet, love my Nexus 7 but sometimes...
Good read. Thanks

Oh bugger, searched for the blog post, didn't think of searching "RAF pilot", even used the advanced search to extend it to a couple of months, sigh... Still, consider it a bump for the, erm, post christmas crowd ๐ Thanks GrahamS
This is the sort of thing that deserves a repost, I spread it about on Facebook a bit when I saw it the first time.
Yea - I read this a few weeks ago & it explains a lot!
As a cyclist (off road mainly) I always look out for cyclists & give them plenty of room BUT I too had a near miss a few weeks ago when pulling out from a junction in my car & one appeared from 'nowhere'.

Good that, thanks.
Yes, great article thanks. it does explain how i so nearly hit a scooter on an empty roundabout. i blamed the pillar and perhaps my speed but saccading was a part of it as well i expect.
Oh bugger, searched for the blog post...
No worries - wasn't criticising.
It's a good article; very worthy of a repost.
