I use one of these with the Alfine on my Alpine:

Chain tensioner and sprocket added. What about crank, can I run a normal single or is there witchcraft involved in the fitting/chainline?

er, just measure the chainline (mid axle at back to sprocket), and use trial and error with spacers to get the mid-BB to chainring distance the same

Fitting kit, if it's not included with the hub. I think it's usually listed seperately.

Fitting kit is not usually with the hub.

To get the hub onto the bike and working you will need -

Hub
Fitting kit
Sprocket (either Alfine or Nexus)
Shifter (either Alfine or Nexus)
Chain tensioner
