I just fitted my first UST tyre onto my newly built 819 UST rim.
Popped and inflated fine. It's a Nobby Nic. Bit of a struggle to fit but it's on.
What do I need to know before riding it?
Incidentally, I gave up waiting for a tyre from CRC and got one from Absolute Cycles on Ebay. Delivered free in just under 24 hours. Recommended.
Pop some sealant in there also but other than that I'd say you're good to go, start playing with slightly lower pressures too.
If I should need to refit it in the wild, what's the secret?
Tyre levers were hopeless so I did it by hand with leather gloves on.
Is there a special knack?
NN on an 819 shouldn't be a problem with the levers - I've used this combination for a few years and they go on OK. I've always used sealant with UST like Notter says. It's not absolutely essential, but it does seem to generally improve the air retention and seal of the tyre bead.
Make sure the bead is in the rim well.
Rip - the bead should slacken a bit while on the rim so hopefully if you do puncture you'll be able to get the tyre back on ok.
sealant, 25psi, go ride. Maxxis LUST HR and Advantage rear here.
I have ditched spare inner tube, repair kit and pump to. Just never needed them so thought might as well save the weight. Maybe regret it but in over a year no punctures. I change the sealant every 6 months or so which seems to work.
When you change the sealant, does it involve completely removing the tyre and giving everything a good clean or is it just a case of emptying out as much as you can thru the valve hole and squirting some more in?
I take the tyre off and give everything a good clean and get rid of the old stuff. Put new stuff in, it has a limited life and its cheap. Why chance a puncture?
It seems daunting changing UST tyres but I have had no problems on XT rim and Maxxis tyres. They go on easy as tube ones. First time it took me a few goes with my track pump to blow up the tyre but once I got the hang of it its pretty simple. I think some have problems because the go ghetto or use normal tyres as tubeless or some other conversion kit. Tubeless rim and tubeless tyres with sealant are excellent I will not be going back. Great traction, low pressure and zero punctures.
